INTRODUCTION
Today is my first day of school at Western High. I'm more nervous than I imagined being; my whole body feels tense, I'm irritated by the numbness and tingling of my hands and I make a tight fist with an attempt to make them stop. I have been staring at my bowl of cereal for a while now, I know I'm hungry but I can't eat. An uneasy feeling feels from my stomach when I hold up the spoon to my mouth. The mere thought of swallowing the cereal hurts. I fear it will come right back out with last night's dinner.
''I thought you said 'I wouldn't dare look like a nerve wreck on my first day to school tomorrow'," mom teases.
See last night while I was ironing our clothes, getting ready for today I boasted about how I fail to understand why kids have to struggle on their first day of school. I mean all you have to do is get to school make friends and life goes on. ''It's that easy," I had concluded. But surprisingly today I'm a shambling wreck in dire need to skip first day of school, how ironic!
"Okay, fine I admit I was wrong," I say making a guilty face.
I know she can tell I won't finish my cereal when she says "Honey if your too nervous to eat, don't force it."
I breathe a huge sigh, knowing well enough that mum is right "I think a glass of apple juice will do,'' I say pushing the bowl away.
"Mind that we'll have to arrive a bit earlier at school for your orientation. I'm sure we wouldn't want to be late on your first day," she says softly.
Driving through the gates into Western High School, we are greeted by the elegant looking buildings. I'm impressed by how clean and tidy the school looks. I see a few students with their parents, being guided by a smart well dressed security guard supposedly to where our special orientation is going to be held.
It is special since we are joining in late to complete grade 12 (form 5) here in Western High School.
Mum laughs as soon as I say this, "At least I'm not the only student joining in for the last senior year here," I say feeling relieved.
"Would you please stop worrying," she commands and I shrug. "The is nothing to worry about," I assure myself mentally.
"Before we get out of the car honey, I want you to know that I expect the same determination, that keen attitude towards school work from you. More especially that this is your last year in high school, you know I would be the happiest mom if you made it for college. Now make sure you choose friends wisely and stay away from negative peer pressure," mom says with a serious tone.
I kiss mom on her cheek and assure her that I will do my best and she seems to be convinced.
With that being said we got out of the car and joined the rest of students and parents. The orientation didn't go for a long time as we were racing behind time. Our parents had to leave for work and we had to go for class.
A seemingly sweet old looking woman who wore some hippie outfit from the 80's offered to take us for a tour around the school before heading to class.
I can't deny how overly impressed I am, my school flourishes from all corners. I'm glad that the feeling is mutual as I overhear the other three students from behind murmur about how their first impressions make them to believe they are at the right place.
All at once my anxiety flooded back as soon as I reached the entrance of my classroom. My heart threatened to burst out of my rib cage as I entered. They all stared while I introduced myself as though an alien had suddenly wandered in amongst them. I kept thinking maybe I hadn't put on my make up properly. I mean looking like a drag queen high on steroids nah ah honey that ain't right.
"We are happy to see you join us Miss Williams, please do feel free to ask for assistance whenever. Check with your colleague's notes to catch up with us if you are left behind," Mr. Tin said with a serious voice and gestured for me to find a seat.
