"I hit him square in the face. Never in my life has something felt as fulfilling and satisfying as driving my fist into that man's jaw." A devious smile lined his face as he spoke.
"You're incorrigible, Enforcer Ginoza," I said teasingly.
"Please, Ginoza will suffice." It was his third time insisting that I drop the 'Enforcer' when addressing him.
I stared out the passenger window of our cruiser. Rays of sunshine peeked out from behind the clouds as if the sun was waking up from a week-long nap. Finally, I thought to myself as I rolled my window down in an attempt to take a breath of fresh air for the first time in what seemed like forever.
"And here I thought the rain would never stop," said Ginoza sarcastically.
The breathtaking skyline gleamed under the midday sun as we made our approach, and the residual moisture in the air refracted the light, painting a vibrant rainbow that caressed the tops of the highest skyscrapers.
"I was looking through the pre-op overview again this morning," I said, breaking the city's hold on my focus.
"Again?" Ginoza snickered. "I believe that makes three times now."
"Isn't it strange that the MWPSB would breach foreign policy for a single agent?" I cocked my head as I asked the question. For one reason or another, I thought Ginoza might be able to offer insight on the subject.
"You're right. It is rather strange that Tokyo would open its borders and grant anyone, especially a foreign agent, access to its soil. Honestly, I don't know what the MWPSB, or Sibyl for that matter, is thinking." Ginoza flashed his indicator and changed lanes while he spoke.
"This foreign agent...Logan Halcyon. What do you know about him?"
Ginoza blinked and brushed his bangs from his eyes. "About as much as one can be expected to. Apparently, he's one of the best the U.S. has to offer. Top of his class, military history, decorated background, combat specialist. It would probably be easier to list the things he couldn't do. Besides, you'll find out when we arrive at HQ."
"'About as much as one can expect', huh." My snide retort made him wince.
"Anyone who gets Tokyo to open its borders is worth investigating." Ginoza peered at me out of the corner of his eye. "Don't you think?" He winked. Recompense for my previous remark, no doubt.
"Heel, Hound 1," I said playfully.
"You wound me, miss. I do have my pride." A rare smile stretched across his face.
"Ouch, Ginoza. Don't let Dime hear you say that." I turned to my left to gaze out the window again. The glistening ocean stretched on towards the horizon where it kissed the sky, blurring the line between them.
"By the way, have you managed to make any progress with Igarashi?" Ginoza said, switching topics. "I know the two of you aren't exactly close."
I sighed a heavy, disconcerting sigh.
"That bad, huh?" Ginoza's voice was sympathetic. "Well, the one thing you need to remember is that you are the superior. As an enforcer, Igarashi is yours to command. The two of you may not get along, but she has no choice but to obey. Considering the alternative, I think she'd acquiesce.
I processed his words as he skillfully snaked his way through traffic. "Oil and water don't mix. Who knew?" I was painfully sarcastic. "I can't turn my back to her without feeling like I'm in the crosshairs of her Dominator. Lord knows she'd take the shot if I ever broke 100. She's the epitome of 'by the book'."
