Silent Night

It was a cold and snowy Christmas night and Agent Dana Scully was on a mission. It was 8pm and usually by this time she would be snuggled around the fireplace sipping eggnog with her mom, telling stories of the past but this year she had to do something far more important. She had to help someone who meant the world to her, or she couldn't go on.

Around 9pm she pulled up in front of the apartment building of her partner Fox Mulder and felt butterflies in her stomach. She quickly inhaled a deep gasp of air, trying to suppress how she felt. She was never good with her feelings, even though she wanted to be honest with herself. Her and Mulder had been openly in a relationship for a couple months now but it felt like years. They had always had an undeniable connection, something no one else could ever imagine to fathom. They understood each other more than anyone else, they were true soul mates no matter what anyone said.

Scully grabbed a small box from the glove compartment of her car and held in to her heart. She placed a small kiss to the box and got out of her car. Locking the doors she started towards the apartment building. Despite her cool exterior, her heart started to beat rapidly as she rode the elevator to Mulder's floor, she frowned and tried to calm down a bit. She reached the floor and strode down the hallway to the apartment that was very much her second home ever since she joined the X-Files.

She knocked on the heavy oak door, anticipating seeing Mulder. Around this time of year he often distanced himself from others, trying to avoid the sentiments, and more importantly the painful memories they brought with them. Scully waited and waited but there was no answer to the door "Thats odd... He can't be asleep, the man has crippling insomnia... Maybe he's watching one of his god awful videos..." She thought to herself, anxiety quickly rising in her chest. Nowadays she was scared to even imagine what could happen to her dearest Mulder, not with that despicable Cancer Man scheming against them. She knocked again, this time a bit harder with a added, "Mulder, it's me!" Her siren song to him. Listening for any sign of life behind the door, she finally heard some ruckus. She heard Mulder get up, kick something, yelp a curse out and loudly stumble over to the door. She shook her head, chuckling to herself.

After the locks unhitched on the door, it swung open to reveal a very distraught looking Mulder. His eyes were drooping and red rimmed, they seemed to be rubbed raw. He looked like he had been crying for hours. His breath was shallow and shakey. Scully was immediately filled with fear and concern. Her heart snapped in two seeing him like this, especially on Christmas. No one, should have to go through this, especially someone as kindhearted and true as Mulder.

"Oh my god! Mulder are you okay?" She rushed to his aid, wrapping her arm around him and cupping his face looking into his eyes, her own blue orbs wide with fear and shock. Mulder was very upset. He was shaking, tears streaming down his face. He could barely get his words out. Scully started to lead him into the apartment, making a beeline for the couch. A ancient adaption of Christmas Carol was quietly whirring on the television. Empty cans of beer were spread on the coffee table. Once they made it to the couch and sat down she ran her hands through his hair, trying to calm him.

"Scully... I've come to the conclusion that I am a soul that should just be left alone.. I suffer too much when I am around others... It always ends in pain." He whimpered out.

She looked at him, and then followed his gaze. He was intranced in a photo of him and Samantha. He reached out to trace Samantha's face, longing to hold her in his arms again someday.

Scully looked at him, the hurt welling in her eyes. She moved to sit down beside him, tracing small circles on his back with her fingers. She rested her head on his shoulder.

"Mulder don't say things like that... It will all be okay. I promise you. I would never leave you, you are the light of my life, my one true happiness. You can't beat yourself to a pulp about it. You have always been the strongest person in the room. You have worked tirelessly, stopping at nothing to find out what happened to her. You were always the person who believed, you were always the light in the darkness. You can't give up now." She whispered, taking his hand in hers.

Mulder rubbed his eyes hard and looked up at Scully, focusing deep into her concerned eyes, searching her soul. He slowly ran his hand down her cheek, tears welling in his eyes again.

"Scully, I'm so lonely, I miss her so much I can't even describe it. Every Christmas I can't even enjoy the holiday, I am stuck with the horrible reminder that Samantha will not get to enjoy this holiday. I can't even face my own mother without relapsing into those painful flashbacks. That's why I have to isolate myself every holiday season. I can't handle the pain." He exhaled deeply and got up to stand by the window, looking out longingly to the sky. Scully got up to stand by Mulder. She took his hand and brought it to her lips, planting a tender kiss to it. She took him into a tight embrace and nuzzled her nose into his chest. She looked up at him, interlocking her hands behind his neck. He wrapped his arms around her small waist and locked eyes with her. Their souls seemed to intertwine.

"Mulder... You are not alone. You are never alone when you have me. I will be there for you when the world falls apart and I will be there for you through everything you face. You are my world, the reason I smile, the reason I'm not just some depressed doctor dragging through life. Ever since I met you, my life has been so much more enjoyable, you have made my life spectacular in every way. If anything happens we will face it together, I promise you." She smiled, tears welling in her eyes now. Mulder looked at her in awe, then smiled, thankful that he had her by his side, always. He bent down and captured her lips in his, kissing her with extreme passion and love. He slowly released the kiss, nuzzling her nose, brushing some hair away from her face, then kissing her forehead.

"Oh, Scully... I love you. I love you with every fiber of my being, to the end of my soul. Don't forget for a second that you are the light of my life, my constant over anything else. You make my life worth living when I feel it isn't anymore. You care when no one else does. I am forever thankful for you." He ran his hands through her hair, and she smiled sweetly.

"I love you too Mulder."
