Them

Them: Chapter 1

I awake with a start and look to my left to see my brother awaken, too. I nod my head and we both set to work. I get down and reach under my bed for my case. I pull it out and open it to find my array of weapons. I grab two knives about the same length of my forearm. I look behind me and see my brother has gathered his silver sword and his book of magic. I get up and head towards the blood curling noise. "How many are there, Levi?" I ask behind me.

He focuses and answers "Two of them, one in the far room and the other in the next room," he looks up and continues, "let us get the one closest." he says and then points to the room just ahead of me with his sword.

We reach the door to the room we headed for. "Where is his approximate location, Lev?" I ask and he nods indicating that it is good to open the door. Contrary to what he though I was going to do I kicked the door open and raised my knives. With one hand above my head and the other in front of me I walk through door slowly.

Levi sighs and walks in behind me. His sword raised and his book open. I hear a creak coming from behind me and I turn to find a man standing in front of me, unarmed. "What are you doing here?" I ask trying to stay alert. He doesn't answer but what he does do is lunges for me. I jump and land on the ceiling. I crawl until I'm over top of him and land on him. I pin him to the ground and then Levi goes to work.

"L'enchaîner!" he says and suddenly glowing chains of arcane power appear around the man. He struggles against the chains and they glow even brighter and he lets out a groan of agonizing pain. The chains stop glowing and he relaxes, no longer struggling with the chains. I nod at my brother and he nods back. I get up and head back out into the hallway. I raise my knives and walk to the last door. I hear my brother behind me and continue towards the last door.
