Jurra carefully crawled out of her nice warm bed. As she stretched, a wide yawn passed through her lips. There was a small crinkling sound as the soft wings attached to her back unfurled. She couldn't resist running her hands along the silky-sleek, minuscule feathers that cast color against her back.
The soft powder that came off on her fingers sent a tingling sensation up her arm. That's when the knock came at the door.
Jurra quickly grabbed the blanket off of her bed, wrapping it around her shoulders and willing her wings to become translucent.
The door creaked open and Jurra's aunt poked her head into the room. "J, you awake?" Jurra chuckled. "Nope. Still asleep. I've just been training to sleep with my eyes open, aunt Gin."
Her aunt laughed too. "Well, when you do wake up, breakfast is almost ready."
Jurra could hear her aunt's footsteps on the stairs, then they stopped and her aunt's voice came back. "Hurry! I almost forgot, it's you first day of school today."
At this, Jurra jumped up and threw the blanket off from around her shoulders. Her wings immediately unfurled, their beautiful colors coming back and filling the room with their radiance.
After rummaging through her closet, Jurra found a beautiful sea-green top that had a low back and quarter length sleeves.
Very carefully, she pulled the shirt on, stretching as she felt her wings coming through between her shoulder blades and flowing gracefully down her back.
She finished the look off with a pair of navy blue jeans and her black converse, accented by the delicate silver butterfly her mother had given her for her 13 birthday.
After completing the ensemble, she opened her closet door and looked at her reflection in the full length mirror.
Normally Jurra didn't like to look at her reflection. The dark olive skin tone contrasted with her sea-green eyes to create a strange effect, almost mesmerizing.
The top matched her eyes beautifully. At least in normal eyes it did. But in Jurra's eyes, The two colors were each different, each weaved through continuously with different tints and shades of the original. Even to her, however, the shirt and her eyes still looked almost... magical, together.
Then the light caught on her wings. They shimmered softly in the slight morning light. To normal eyes, they would seem riddled with dark violet, lavender, and the same green as her eyes, but Jurra could see that her wings contained every color imaginable.
Each of the microscopic feathers were a different color, and they swirled around her, creating beautiful designs.
Every day, the colors seemed to change, but she had noticed that none of the other fairies had wings like her's. Most were confined to the shades of one color, and all were different, like the color of their eyes.
Jurra's focus on her wings held her there for a moment, then she heard a familiar voice downstairs.
"Jurra!" Her aunt called. "Your going to be late!"
That snapped her out of her reverie, and she quickly willed her wings to disappear again as she grabbed her new satchel and bounded through the doorway, hopping up onto the banister and riding it down the spiral staircase.
When she reached the kitchen doorway, her nose crinkled at the smell of eggs and bacon. Then an all together more satisfying scent filled the air, the scent of a delicious strawberry peach smoothie.
She flew through the doorway and seated herself at a bench that was lined up next to the island in the center of the kitchen. One sip of the smoothie set a burst of flavor bursting through Jurra's mouth, and it didn't take long for her to finish it. Before she knew it, she was out the door, and on her way to her first day of public school.
She spared a quick glance at the place she called home, a three story Victorian era home that had been painted a cheery pink. One end was backed up to a forest, while the other side faced the beautiful foaming ocean.
Once Jurra got going down the hill on her bike, she really picked up speed, and it only took her a couple of minutes to get to the student parking lot of her new high school.
As she walked through the doors, an older girl pounced. "Hey freshman!" She said in an overly bubbly voice.
"My name is Bailey, and I am SBO President. I am here to give you everything you need!" She pulled out a clipboard and flipped through a few pages. "Whats your name?"
Jurra felt a little edgy, but she was surprised when her voice didn't waiver. "I'm Jurra."
The girl sighed irritably, her eyes disappearing into the back of her head before zeroing back in on Jurra. "I meant," she said, stretching out meant to add a bite to it, "your last name."
"Oh!
She flipped through a few more pages on her clipboard before pulling one out and holding it towards Jurra. "This is you schedule, and you locker combo. There's also a map on the back, but this is such a small school you probably won't need it."
Jurra took the paper and smiled at Bailey. It was nice to have support on her first day of public school after having been home-schooled most of her life.
She glanced down at her schedule and noticed that her first class was Ancient Mythology. She smiled slightly. Mythology was her forte.
Bailey turned to greet the next freshman that wandered through the doors, and Jurra wandered away towards room 99.
Just as she reached the door, she felt the pressure of someone staring at her back. The stare was so intense that it made her wings tingle uncomfortably.
She turned, and saw a boy standing next to an open locker, his eyes locked onto here. They were a golden-orange color that almost look like flames, and something in them almost seemed familiar to her.
Jurra turned and started to hurry back down the hall, looking for any escape from those burning eyes.
She heard foot steps behind her, so she picked up her pace, finding herself at the end of a hallway that had the locked door of the drama department blocking her way.
Turning quickly to confront the boy, she found him right in front of her. She took a quick step back and her wings hit the door.
"I know what you are." The boy said. Jurra shuddered. "How?" She asked. The boy smiled and a faint glimmer shot out from behind his back, revealing wings that looked like living flames.
"Because, I'm your brother."
