I walked home after school to my house. I had told people after school to try to come to my house as soon as they can, but I knew nobody would. I walked through the streets in silence waiting to get home and flop on my couch so I can just watch today flow by and not exist. However... I knew that wouldn't be the case. Today was my birthday, of course my parents and relatives would show up and get me to do the ancient ritual and blow out the candles. I get off the street into the small area filled with small apartments side by side. Each apartment has 2 floors. Some may be gifted with the rare and unusually small attic. My house just had to be one of them. And it just so happened to be my room. When we first bought the place it had 3 bedrooms. Perfect for my mom and dad to take a room. My 11 year old brother to have a room and for me. But I knew it was going to have to end soon with my brother turning 13. Now he is 17 and still lives with us and still won't go to the school for more training, it may be because of our family name or something, I don't really know. When I walk up to the area containing my small apartment house, I noticed the balloons draped over the windows and all over the yard and I felt my face blush. It's so embracing seeing these out. I walk inside running to try and escape, only to be picked up by my uncle. "Are you ready for the big day champ?"
"No." I exclaimed. "I don't want to be laughed at school for this. AGAIN!"
"Relax, this time it'll be different."
"You said that about my brother's 13th birthday."
"Yeah... but I really know it this time, you're special."
"Sure." I walk into the house, my parents are sitting at the counter applying the finishing touches to my cake. I could see the big-bold blue "13" written on it, blue being my most favored color besides gold, but I knew we won't be having a golden cake. I sit at the couch thinking at least one person would be coming. But I knew, none will for this day.

Soon enough, we hear the doorbell and to no avail, it was my grandparents. Of course.
"Hey bud, ready for the big day!"
"Sure thing pops." For the rest of the time, while my parents finished my cake, we sat in silence. Soon enough my brother came into the room, and I knew it was time to start. Once they finished the cake, we started opening presents. I got 40 bucks from my grandfather and a new bike from my grandmother. My uncle got me something I knew I'd treasure forever, my very first wand, passed down through out my families history. After all the presents from my grandparents and uncle, my mother, father and brother brought what made the 13th birthday so special. The ring specially made to summon your familiar. My father said the thing every parent said when bringing forth the table.
"Once a child had turned 13 he is able to bring forth a powerful ally, one who he can call for in the time of need. Now son, it is time for yours." I knew this would happen. The time when I would fulfill what everyone at school laughed at me about. My family was known for week familiars. My dad had a squirrel, the squirrel could not do anything but go fetch what my father asked for. It was useless. My brother had a bat. It could do nothing but fly around and use echolocation to help search in the dark. It was useless. My mother was the more promising one. She had a garden gnome it could ward off small amounts of disruptive magical spells. But that's all. It was useless. I was ready to do the same thing. Call forth a horrible monster. A dumb little fly for all I know. I could call forth a small little weed monster who could make people want to bend down mid fight. It'd be useless I was prepared to just give up. But I had to do it, everyone was here and was ready. I brought up my wand and made the basic spell circle. I waved my wand to the side and the circle floated and twirled onto the mat. The circle glowed with a bright-vivid light. As the creature started to form my eyes grew droopy and my face twisted with disappointment. I looked at my parents, my family and my uncle. Their eyes filled with anticipation. Then, when I turned to face the horror of my useless familiar, a golden light filled the room, an aura so strong it could be felt across the whole world. Rising from the formation was a beautiful Chinese Dragon, bathed with scales of gold. It's aura radiated throughout the whole room. After I looked around the room I saw nobody looking at me. What they did do was look down towards their feet. The bringing forth of this Dragon had the strength to summon the familiars of my family just by existing. It was a miracle. My grandfather soon looked at me and said a few, simple words.
"I have only heard stories from my great grandfather. The keeper of the golden dragon."

I just had to ask my grandfather what he meant. He then explained to me, "only one other time has there been someone in this family with a familiar with suck power, such greatness. His name was Liang Wii. He was known as the most powerful man of his time. He is what gave this family our name, but. He is also the man who gave ruin to this family. That is a story from another time. For now, walk around with pride for you are now the new keeper of the golden Dragon. The strongest in our family for milenium. You. Are Jake, the new keeper of the Dragon bathed in gold."
