My eyelids are heavy but I force them open. I lift my head from my uncomfortable pillow. Phil's head is resting lightly on my stomach and his face is peaceful and without worry...a rare sight here. I use my fingers to brush back the strands of dark hair that have fallen over his eyes and very carefully move out from underneath him. He sighs unhappily in his sleep and clutches at the thin blanket. I hop off of the bed and then lean down to place a quick kiss to his forehead. He calms under my touch and his face relaxes again. I glance at the tiny clock by our bed and sigh. It's 10:40 which means I should get going to the meeting. I run my fingers through my messy hair trying (and probably failing) to fix my fringe. I quickly throw on some clothes and walk out of our room. I shut the door behind me as quietly as I can. I walk along the corridor and listen out for any noises I should be wary off. I know that the entire underground system here is putting itself at risk by doing this and I don't want to be the one that causes it's downfall. When I reach the hall I see that some of the others are already gathered there. Tyler is sat in the corner, cross legged on the floor with Troyes head in his lap. Louise and Matt are sat with Darcy reading a book. Pj and Chris are kissing enthusiastically in the corner. I pull at my sleeves uncomfortably. I feel lost without Phil but I would have been so mean to wake him. I take one of the chairs that are set out in a circle. 24 chairs to be exact. I swallow back the sudden lump in my throat as I remember that there used to be so many more. The bell at the top of the hall rings out-loud enough for us to hear but not so loud that it alerts the undead around us. Everyone stops there activities and comes to sit on the plastic chairs. We are missing five of us. One of my closest female friends Mary stands up. "I'm taking the meeting today because Ellie is still asleep and I didn't want to wake her." She says smiling. She looks tired...but then we all do. "Who isn't here?" She asks her eyes scanning around the circle. She hold up a list and I feel sick as I see all the people on the list who's names have been scribbled out with a thick black marker. Paper is a valuable resource now and we can't waste it by getting a new piece of paper every time someone dies. She looks around the circle noting who's here and who isn't. "Okay so I know where Ellie is...where's Alfie?" She asks looking in the direction of Zoe who is sat besides Louise. She rolls her eyes "asleep as usual." Zoe says. Mary smiles and scans the list again. She goes through three other names before looking at me. "Where's Phil?" She asks. "Still asleep. I didn't want to wake him." I say and she nods and smiles looking slightly relieved. "Are you sure everyone that would want to be here us here?" Mary asks looking over is again. We all nod together and she sits down heavily on one of the chairs. "Right, as you know it can be a struggle to live here. So many rules and jobs and rarely a chance for fun. Of course we all make fun together but we thought it would be nice to have an event. So we have decided to have a 'party' I suppose you could call it. We are all going to assemble here in this hall. There will be food set out and there will be music." She says the word music in hushed tones. Music is an extremely rare thing. Unless we sing or play instruments (which are long since gone...the materials in the instruments were too valuable to be used for fun and games) we don't have music. There is very little electricity but still some. We do have natural light during the day and wind up torches at night but we rarely use electricity unless it is an emergency. We call our home the underground (even though it isn't underground) because it is so cut off. But that's how we have survived the apocalypse. We don't go outside unless we are desperate and only the strongest and most trained go even then. 'Zombies' are nothing like the ones in films or books. They're smart. They aren't partially brain dead. The 'zombies' are people that were infected with a virus. The virus spread like crazy and very few people didn't get it. It mutated the bodies cells and made the person able to live on no food or water. It made them strong and clever. It gave them a love for the taste of human flesh and a hunger to recruit others. They target the strong and bite them to pass the virus on. They target the weak and eat them. They ate/changed three quarters of the worlds population. After the outbreak of disease had calmed somewhat they began to create a vaccination. The scientists were all killed before they could complete it properly and all they left us behind was a vaccination that would kill you immediately after you were bitten. Most people decided this was preferable to being turned into a zombie and had the vaccination. There are a a few dozen homes like ours across the world, housing any from 10-700+ but the bigger the home the more at risk it is. We learnt that the hard way. I start paying attention to Mary again. "The party will start at 9 until whenever. When the food is gone it's gone. And of course, the golden rule. Don't make to much noise! But make sure to have fun!" She finishes with a smile. "Does anyone have any questions or comments?" She asks. Everyone shakes their heads and begins to put the chairs back into there piles at the sides of the hall. We all exit the hall quickly and I almost sprint back to my room. When I go in I find Phil writhing around on the bed his face creased up with discomfort. I know what is happening and I feel immediately guilty. He's having a nightmare and I didn't help him because I left him alone. Nightmares are common here because we've seen such awful things. I slide under the blanket next to Phil and pull him close to me. As soon as I'm there his body relaxes and he clings to me gratefully. He opens his eyes and blinks sleepily at me. "Hey." I say smiling at him. He hoists himself up and wraps his arms around my neck. "I had such a horrible dream." he mumbles into my neck. I rock him gently feeling ashamed. "I know I'm sorry." I say back rubbing my hands up and down his spine soothingly. I don't ask what the dream was about because I know he prefers not to say. We sit together wrapped in each other's arms for a little while. "Hey Phil guess what." I say leaning back to look him in the eyes. "What?" He asks searching my face to see whether I have bad news. "They're going to have a party in the hall because they don't think we have enough fun here." I inform him laughing slightly. His face breaks into an adorable smile. "Really?" He asks me "yeah really. Mary and Ellie organised the whole thing for everyone. It's starts at nine." I tell him smiling at how excited he looks. "Do we have any jobs to do today?" He asks me looking around the room for our list. "Nope I already checked. I went to the group council and you have to do the cooking at lunch but other than that we don't have anything to do today." I say. He nods. "Great I'm going back to sleep then!" He says before burrowing down under the covers and wrapping his arms around my waist. I grin at him and join him under the blanket. I fall asleep again to Phil's steady breathing and warm body curled up against mine.
