When I was ten, I fell for William Johnson.
It was an icy October day seven years ago. The fifteenth of October at 8:29 am to be exact.
I traipsed to East Oak Elementary behind my mother and sister, dreading getting there.
School was horrible. I was a tomboy so all the boys teased me. They pulled on my ponytail whenever they raced past and chanted my name when they got bored. It didn't help that I'd hit a growth spurt and soared in height. I was the tallest in my class now and that just made more people gawk.
It was in that moment of all-enveloping self-pity that I heard a little girl squeal. I glanced up, spotting a girl trip and fall onto the icy pavement. I lunged forward, intending to help, but he was already there.
In moments, the chubby ten-year-old boy was picking up the girl and dusting her off. He set her down on her feet and handed her the tattered stuffed bunny she'd dropped. She clutched it eagerly before blinking up at him with eyes the size of bowling balls.
"Sank you," she chimed, slurring her words.
And then it happened. His mask broke for a moment and a smile slid onto his face. The kind of smile that made his entire face glow with a warmth that seared into my chest. The kind of smile you could never forget.
And, in that moment, with my eyes locked in awe on the boy's perfect grin, I fell for William Johnson.
