Forming a Reason
Chapter 4- The Intruder
I told the wolves everything. Except the fact that I had to work extra hours, that can wait. The wolves were yawning or staring around half the time but I knew that they were listening. Even if they weren't, I didn't really have a choice.
I sighed and stretched out my legs, I was really tired. I wanted to go home now, and I was surprised at how calm I actually was. I wasn't afraid of the dark at all, it wasn't exactly dark though. The fire was still burning.
I fished out my phone and yawned. Checking the time, I saw that it was 12:03 AM. I better get home, I still had work tomorrow and I was sure that I didn't want Nelsie to extend those extra hours.
I shoved my phone inside my pocket and stood up, the wolves' heads snapped towards my direction and they stared at me. But I ignored them and dusted off the back of my jeans. They were going to either growl or snarl when I'm going to tell them that I'm leaving, but I can't sleep here. I haven't even brought a tent.
I looked up and pursed my lips, they were still staring. "Um, guys... I think I've got to go now and-" They growled and I sighed in exasperation, just what I needed. "Guys, please. Not today, can't we just skip this for one day?"
Their growling ceased and they froze, their ears twitching in different directions. My hearts started beating slightly faster, something was wrong and I didn't know what. That thought alone was scary and the fact that it was dark and I was in the woods when something went wrong was scarier.
I swallowed, "G-Guys, w-what's wrong? What happened?"
As if Alex suddenly noticed me, he snarled at my direction and instantly Mel was by my inside. I glanced at her confusedly as Alex and Troy let out a threatening growl and dashed off into the deeper parts of the woods. I stared at their direction in worry, something was really wrong.
I have been in the deeper parts, but that was the first time I came into the woods. After that day, I never really got a chance to go there, the wolves always led me away from there. I agree, the deeper parts were not like the rest of the woods. The trees were older there and when I first went there, I had an un-easy feeling, like I wasn't meant to be there.
I don't think I've ever seen the wolves act like that, they never left me whenever I visited them they were always with me. I was really worried, what was going on?
I heard howls from somewhere a bit far from us and I was certain that I had three of them. My hearts started beating faster again, three howls... but... Mel was right here with me.
Mel let out a low growl and I paled. There was another wolf in the woods.
I needed to know if Alex and Troy were okay, I can't just stand here and do nothing. I know I can't do much but I've got to help them in one way or another.
I looked over at Mel for a second then took a deep breath and ran.
I knew I wasn't fast enough and I knew she was following me because I could hear her growl. She wasn't going to let me go and she was going to try and stop me. But I would not stop, not when Alex and Troy are somewhere in the deeper parts, maybe hurt.
From my peripheral vision, I could see that Mel was right beside me and she was growling, probably telling me to stop. Fear struck my heart as I thought of what Mel could do to stop me, would she bite me? Maybe tackle me to the ground? Claw me to a stop...?
I shook my head to clear those thoughts, Mel wouldn't hurt me. She's my friend.
I was breathing hard since both of my hearts were beating fast due to all the running. But I managed to let out a few words between breaths, "Don't... stop me... we have to... help," I panted.
