"Lucas?"
He was surprised to hear her use his real name and looked down.
"Have I ever said anything nice to you?" She asked seriously.
He just chuckled. He knew she had been nice to him before, but he wanted to see where she was going with this. "No..." He said.
Maya sighed. "Well, it's one minute til midnight and I'm glad you're standing here." She admitted making him smile.
"Wow. That kinda makes up for everything." He replied. He thought about it and realized she had just told him how important he was to her. Farkle said that whoever you were with at midnight is who you'll spend the year with and he smiled knowing now that Maya chose him. She wanted to spend the rest of the year with him and that made him happy. The countdown had started and he decided in that moment that he was going to kiss Maya at midnight. He smiled and leaned in to kiss her. He was happy when she started to lean.
"Riley still loves Lucas!"
He heard Farkle shout out behind him. He wanted to shake it off and just kiss Maya, but Maya backed away so he turned to look at Farkle, to glare at him.
He saw Riley, he really did like her, but he felt something for Maya and he wanted to figure out what it was so he wouldn't hurt Riley or Maya. He couldn't stand the thought of hurting one of his best female friends.
"Happy New Year!" Riley yelled out awkwardly then she blew on one of those excitement horns.
Farkle looked from Riley to Lucas and Maya. "I'm sorry guys. I did the right thing." He held his hand back for Smackle, but she didn't take it. He looked back to find her staring at Maya. He looked at Maya and saw her backing up towards the ledge of the roof.
Lucas didn't see Maya. He was still glaring over at Farkle.
Riley was looking down at her feet still feeling awkward and uncomfortable standing there.
Smackle snapped them all out of it when she saw Maya get up on the ledge. She smacked Farkle's arm. "Farkle! Do something!"
Farkle could only stare. Maya was on the ledge. Because of me? "No. Maya." He whispered.
Maya shook her head and tears fell down her pale, cold, cheeks.
On top of the roof
The air is so cold and so calm
I say your name in silence
You don't wanna hear it right now
The eyes of the city
Are counting the tears falling down
Each one a promise
Of everything you never foundLucas spun around and saw her. "Maya!" He called to her.
Riley finally looked up hearing the fear in his voice. "Maya?!" She yelled out feeling her own fear gripping at her heart.
I scream into the night for you
Don't make it true
Don't jump
The lights will not guide you through
They're deceiving you
Don't jump
Don't let memories go
Of me and you
The world is down there out of view
Please don't jumpLucas walked over to the ledge and in one swift motion he grabbed her hand and pulled her down into his arms. "Maya!"
You open your eyes
But you can't remember what for
The snow falls quietly
You just can't feel it no more
Somewhere out there
You lost yourself in your pain
You dream of the end
To start all over againRiley, Farkle, and Smackle rushed over to them. Lucas had his arms wrapped around her and his head was resting on her's as he cried. "Maya, what were you thinking? Why would you-"
She opened her eyes and looked up at him. She looked around at everyone else as the snow fell down quietly around them.
"Let's get off the roof." Farkle said in a whisper feeling sad and guilty. Lucas glared up at him. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean-"
He gathered Maya up in his arms and stood. "Forget it. You did it and it's done. You can't change what happened." He said.
Farkle frowned. "I never meant for this to happen." He sighed.
Lucas just walked past him.
Riley sighed and rubbed his arm. "I know you didn't want that to happen, Farkle. It's okay."
"No. It's not." Smackle stated. "If Lucas didn't grab her you would've lost Maya. I told you to do something while she was climbing up on the ledge and you did nothing. You made your choice."
"Smackle, that's not fair or nice to say. Farkle didn't cause this."
"Yes. He did. By deciding that you and your juvenile feelings of, how shall I put this, a pretty fairy princess crush, were more important he caused a domino effect. Maya, being the last domino, fell. All because Farkle knocked over the first one, you, when he pushed you to confess that you lied. And the only reason he did that was because he still loves you. Not me, you. So I am done. Goodbye." Smackle explained then she walked away from them.
"Farkle, you didn't cause this. Smackle just doesn't understand."
Farkle shrugged her off. "Maya could have died, she could have jumped and ki-killed herself, because of me." He walked away.
Riley stood in the cold, watching the snow fall down around her. She sighed. "Happy New Year." She said sadly then she walked off the rooftop to go back down to her apartment where she knew Lucas took Maya.
