Alex's POV

"Dylan O'Brien! I said I'm not gonna do it." I was in the cafeteria with my best friend who was currently trying to convince me to skip the next period so I could take him to buy socks and beanies. Dylan pouted at me.

That was the look I had fallen in love with. Yes, I'm in love with my best friend. The only problem though, is that he sees me as his 'buddy' and nothing more. "Why not?" He asked seriously.

"Dylan, why the hell do you want socks and beanies now? We could always go after school." He stopped tapping our forks against his lunch tray and stared at me with his mouth open.

"Go after school? Alexis, where's the fun in that? After twelve years of being best friends you still haven't grown a decent pair of balls."

I grabbed my fork from him. "How many times do I have to tell you I hate being called that? And after twelve years of being best friends you still haven't realized that I have a vagina and I'm incapable of having or even growing a pair of balls, much less a decent pair."

He gave me a confused look, "Wait, you're a girl!? Jesus, Alex, like, why didn't you tell me? Here I am trying to get the attention of the hottest girl in the school and I've had a babe like you right under my nose?"

I picked up my apple and tossed it at him. He gracefully ducked out of the way and the apple bounced off Ryan Preston's head and I cursed under my breath. He turned and glared at me and shook his head. “Please don’t say anything. Please don’t say anything.” I whispered over and over again. It was almost like a chant; like I was willing him to not say a word with my mind. A deafening silence came over the cafeteria just as he said

"Jesus, Alexis! Let it go; it's been a year. I know I cheated on you and all, but an apple to the head? Seriously? That’s real mature." The entire cafeteria erupted with laughter and Ryan smiled, obviously proud with himself. I sunk further in my seat and glared at Dylan who was smiling innocently at me,

"What?" he whined.

"This is your fault."

He raised one of his perfectly shaped eyebrows at me. "That's funny because I don't recall telling you to specifically bounce an apple off your ex's head." I sighed loudly and shook my head. This boy had the amazing talent of being so insensitive sometimes.

"Forget it Dylan." His smile disappeared and he reached over and grabbed my hand.

"Are you okay? I mean, with Ryan and all. I know it's been like, a year and all but are you okay?" I swallowed the lump in my throat. I refused to shed another tear because if Ryan. I was done giving him the power to break me. He’d ruined my life enough as it is.

"I'm fine. Please, can we just drop it?" He looked at me; searching my eyes, trying to figure out if I was telling the truth or not.

"Okay, okay, fine. I'm gonna change the subject. Are we going to get my socks and beanies or not?" I rolled my eyes at him.

"Dyl, I have creative writing next," I was lying my class got cancelled earlier today. "and I want to run some new stuff by Mr. Jennings." Dylan waved a dismissal hand at me.

"What's one class Alex? You have a perfect attendance record, well minus those few times I got you in trouble. You need to mess up at least once before college or people would think you're like, a robot or something. I mean, look at me; I get reasonably good grades, I'm a part of the drama club, I'm on the soccer team but I sit on the bench for all my games and I was almost expelled that one time when I...." He didn't get to finish that remarkable speech because whoever walked through those doors behind me cast a spell on him.

Ashley stopped at our table and smiled at Dylan. "Hey Dylan." She said in one of those annoying girl voices. She was twirling a strand of extra bleached blonde hair around her perfectly manicured finger. God, I hated her. Dylan was still staring at her and hadn't even acknowledged the fact that she was talking to him. I kicked him under the table and he cleared his throat, only the sound came out like a dying toad.

"Uh, hey Ashley. What are you doing here? Shit! Not, like 'What are you doing here at school or in the cafeteria?' But, like, what are you doing talking to me?" I shook my head as this train wreck continued. Ashley was loving every second of it. She thrived on the fact that she could get a standing ovation from EVERY boy in the school. And I don't mean the literal standing ovation. No, I mean the one that originates from down south.

Dylan was still stuttering like the dofus he was and I thanked God I was able to hide my feelings for him better than whatever the hell he was doing now. "Ah, but not like in a mean way or anything. I just, uh, like why would Ashley Green," he rolled her name off his tongue smiled like he tasted caramel, "want to talk to me, in public, in front of people." I slapped my hand over my face and

Ashley giggled and leaned over the table, giving Dylan a front row view to her 'perfect' bosoms. "Well Dylan," she said in a flirty tone as she ran her hands through his hair, "maybe Ashley Green thinks Dylan O'Ryan is just a charm."  I scoffed and rolled my eyes; I could not believe this bitch.

"It's actually Dylan O'Brien." She frowned at me. "Thanks for the correction grandma." She turned and winked at Dylan,

"Bye." She squeaked and with a very dramatic toss of her very fake blonde hair she was gone. I turned to Dylan hoping to continue or argument, or something, anything to make me forget what just happened. When I looked at him his face was an unusual shade of red.

"Dyl?" He was still staring at the spot where that plastic bottle was a few seconds ago. "Dylan." I said louder this time causing him to look at me.

"Mhhn" I shook my head in disgust; not at him, but at her.

"Dylan, breathe out."
