Alex took a deep breath before she grinned and opened the door. The mailman’s eyes widened when he saw her smile and he had no choice but to return it; it was that contagious. He handed her a package and she squealed a little as she took it from him, making him chuckle softly.
“You’re pretty excited, Alex.” He said handing her the clipboard so she could sign. She nodded and scribbled her name on the clipboard and handed it back to him.
“You have no idea.” She smiled looking down at the small brown box. She knew what was in here and she could not wait to get inside and open it. “Thank you.” She said looking up at the mailman; usually she would make small talk with him but today she just wanted to go inside and tear this box open.
“How’s your mom?” The mailman asked adjusting the strap on his shoulder. Alex glanced down at his bag that looked like it would fall apart because it was so full of mail.
“She’s good. How’s Emma? Is she adjusting to school?” Alex asked as she remembered he had a really cute six year old daughter. She used to babysit her when she was younger and she was just the cutest kid ever.
“She’s really good. Thanks for asking. She comes home every day with incredible stories about school. I'm just really happy she’s fitting in and... I dunno, I'm just happy. She says she misses you.”
“Aww, tell her I’ll try my best to come see her and I miss her too.” Alex said smiling at the thought of the little girl. She remembered that sometimes Dylan used to tag along and Emma was obsessed with him. She used to tell them how she wanted them to get married so she could have babies to play with; she was that smart. It stung a little; remembering random moments when they were still friends but she was getting better day by day. She was beginning to finally get over it because she convinced herself that high school friendships never lasted anyway and it was better that she started getting rid of them now.
“I gotta get going though. I’ll see you later.” He said adjusting the strap on his bag again and backing down her porch steps. She smiled and waved; she didn’t even wait for him to get to the bottom of the porch steps, she opened the door and backed into the house.
She didn’t even make it to the couch. She dropped on the floor and braced her back against the door. She dug her hands into her pocket and took out her keychain. She took a few seconds to find the small pocket knife she kept on it and she aggressively dug it into the top of the box. She ripped the box open and turned it upside down.
She had been waiting all her life for this moment and after ten years, it was finally here. Ever since she was eight she knew this was what she wanted to do; she used to get teases because she was always in a corner bent over a book writing. That was all she ever wanted to do; write. And finally, after so long, after all the shit she had to take from associates, after so long she was finally sitting in front of a pile of her own book. A book that she’d written. It still hadn’t quite sunken in that she had finally gotten what she wanted most in the world. Even if this was the only thing she ever wrote never got published she was happy that she at least had something out there.
She picked up one of the books and ran her hands over the red cover. It looked exactly how she had wanted it to look and she was probably being a little bias but she really though it was the most beautiful thing she ever saw in her life. Even the worn out pair of black converse she always wore at the bottom of the page made the book look amazing.
Alex opened the book to a random page and put it to her face, sniffing it. “Oh God.” She groaned leaned her head back against the door and smiling at the scent she got. She was probably overreacting about this but no one would understand what this meant to her. She turned to the first page of the book and ran her hand over the page before reading what was on it.
