Adeline Harmony Dolores Ellöise Diggs-Reese held Rafael Santiago Casal softly yet harder than she'd held anyone before. Her jaw was set as she checked his breathing and pupils with a flashlight, all while never letting go and definitely without letting Daveed Diggs out of her sight.
It had been a rough, confusing two days, and as scared as she was of both of them in that moment, she vowed not to let them remember how young she was.
It was her strategy. She already looked a few years older than she was, and she never told people her age.
If they asked, she told them, but she'd play it off, acting more mature until they learned to look past it.
She was a wonderful actress. But on some days, everything would catch up to her and she'd be unable to get out of bed.
She would just lay there, realizing how easily influenced she could be, how young she was, and how much danger she could put herself on by acting on her maturity.
This was not one of those days.
Of course, she was scared. More than she'd ever been. These were grown men who'd been known to act violent. She felt as if she only had three options.
1: Go to the bathroom and call the police or another emergency service, or her family. She wouldn't want anyone to find out about this, though, and somehow the men would probably find out and get mad.
2: Act "her age", show how scared she was, let the adults take care of it. But then they might get annoyed, and the last thing she wanted to do was get them irritated or disappointed in her. That was something she could never bear.
Or 3: Act older and tough, take matters into her own hands. Even though it was risky and they might treat her like they would treat an adult, it was, in her mind, the best option.
She shook her head, she kept saying "they", but after this, there was no guarantee that there would be a "they" anymore. She's ruined the group. It was her fault.
She took Rafa's head and gently whispered with her mouth hidden behind her hair so the other man couldn't see , "I've done what I can. Please, please don't leave me alone with him." Slowly, his eyes opened and he gave her a strange look of promise as he carefully rose up, wincing at the pain in his jaw.
"Diggs, listen, I don't want to get into a fight."
Daveed's lips became as straight as a ruler, but he leaned back from his kneeling position.
"No fighting. Please. Not yet.
The other man said nothing, but stared straight into Rafael's eyes and held out his hand. Rafa took it and gave it one shake before drawing away to look at Adeline.
"Look, Addie, go the living room, okay? We'll meet you there."
The girl obeyed. She felt buzzy, lightheaded, and yet every step she took her feet felt like lead. She knew there was no going back, her recklessness had finally reached her breaking point, and she had no idea what came next.
She just knew that her "normal" life had been compromised because she trusted both too much and too little.
She needed someone to trust, but that luxury didn't seem to exist anymore.
