Archie It was seven o'clock in the morning, the time you usually woke to get ready for school. Whatever meagre sunlight there was streamed through your window, spilling a golden glow onto your pillow. You yawned before swinging your legs over the side of your bed and walking towards your already open window.
'Archie should be here soon,' you mused. Every morning, he would walk with you to school, despite living a few blocks away from you. This morning, however, he seemed to be late.
Deciding to get ready anyway, you dressed in a casual T-shirt and jeans and tied up your hair before heading outside to wait for your boyfriend. Finally, after what seemed like forever, someone came. It wasn't Archie, though.
'Hey, (your name)!' greeted Betty, ever the ball of sunshine she was. She'd accepted you and Archie's relationship so gracefully, even though she loved him first. You valued your friendship, but you were still confused as to why she was here instead of Archie.
'Where's...' you began, trailing off before you could finish your sentence. On second thought, you didn't want to be rude.
'Arch? Oh, he went to school early. He told me to tell you that he's getting something ready, so please don't be mad at him.
'Of course,' you replied.
The two of you walked to school, leaving you to wonder what Archie was getting ready. The mystery was soon solved when you arrived at the building, only to be frozen in shock at the sight of what was in front of you. Unbeknownst to you, Betty was grinning mischievously.
The building was decorated with a large sheet of tarpaulin, decorated with the word "prom" with a curly question mark. Your boyfriend was standing on an impossibly tall ladder, holding a can of pink spray paint that marked him as the perpetrator and ignoring the crowd of teachers beneath him yelling at him to get down.
'Will you?' he asked when you were close enough to hear him.
'Yes!!' you exclaimed. 'Now get down from there before you kill yourself!'
Betty It was a normal date for you and Betty, a visit to the museum on the edge of town. You (were/weren't) really interested in the artefacts that were displayed, but it was hard to focus on them when your gorgeous girlfriend was right next to you.
Halfway through, Betty decided that it would be fun to eat lunch at the museum's rooftop cafe. You objected because the food was rather highly priced, but she ignored you and practically dragged you up the stairs to the diner. When you reached the top, you were awestruck by the view. For a town with so many secrets, it sure looked beautiful from above.
'Why don't we look over the edge?' suggested Betty. You complied, and you walked towards the viewing platform that was surrounded by a protective wall of glass.
Below you, basically everyone you knew had gathered to form four letters: P, R, O and M. You were lost for words. You couldn't believe that anyone would do such a thing for you, but Betty just had. All you could do was hug her.
Cheryl Your red-haired girlfriend had never been one for beating around the bush, but she was one for bold gestures. Ridiculously, often embarrassingly bold gestures, and the way she asked you to prom was no exception.
It was one of those days when everything seemed to be just right. The sky was blue, but with enough cloud coverage for it not to be boiling hot. When you arrived at school, you were pleased to find that there were no tests that day, nor assignments. It seemed that nothing could go –
BANG!!
Perhaps you'd spoken too soon, for the moment you were about to fall asleep, an array of fireworks burst outside the window of the classroom you were currently in. It didn't take a genius to figure out who'd set them off. The name they spelled was a pretty big giveaway.
'Oh, God, please don't let her be doing what I think she's doing,' you muttered as you watched Cheryl talking to the men she must have hired to present the elaborate display.
Within seconds, another name was in the air: yours. All you wanted at that moment was to crawl into a hole and die, but the letters kept coming, this time spelling out Cheryl's proposal.
'Well, that's one way to ask someone to prom,' commented Veronica who was sitting next to you.
'Tell me about it,' you replied.
This was the shit you had to endure on a daily basis, but despite all reason, you couldn't bring yourself to say that you would give it up for anything. After all, you cared about Cheryl and she cared about you, and that was all that mattered.
