----------------------------------

Once at my house, I quickly retrieved my keys and went inside with Andrea in tow. She stayed with me for about an hour before leaving to return home. As soon as she was safely in her car, I locked the door and went upstairs to take a shower then changed into my pj’s.

When finished, I laid down on my bed and looked at the clock on my bedside table. It was 10:07 and my parents would be home between 10:30 and 11. I closed my eyes tiredly and was just moments from dream land when I heard a loud thump from downstairs.

I darted up quickly as my heart pounded in my chest. I stood slowly and forced myself to replay all of the karate classes I had taken. I grabbed my pepper spray off of my key chain and moved towards my door. I was the fastest runner in the state which meant I could most likely outrun whoever made that noise. I concentrated on keeping my breathing as slow as possible as I began going downstairs.

What am I doing? What type of idiot goes towards the sounds of a possible break in? What if it was a murderer? Oh yeah, those stupid people in horror movies that end up being the first ones dead! But what am I supposed to do? Wait in my room for the killer to come up here?

My head twitched and my eyes blinked repeatedly. I took a deep breath. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. At the bottom of the stairs I noticed the front door was open. No it was definitely not my imagination. This was happening. I gripped my pepper spray tighter in my sweaty palm.

Why don’t I have a cell phone again? Oh right, I dropped it in the toilet last week. Brilliant job Sherlock! I looked around the corner and could not see or hear anything out of the ordinary which freaked me out. My hands shook and I struggled to keep them still. I looked over at the house phone on the kitchen counter and looked around. Once I was sure no one was in the kitchen, I rushed over to the phone and snatched it up.

I turned around and came face to face with the man from the restaurant. I wasted no time as I sprayed him in the face with the pepper spray. I proceeded to bring my knee up to his groin. The man doubled over in pain and hissed. I gunned it to the stairs and reached the top when an arm went around my waist. A cloth was pressed against my nose and mouth. I was stunned by his quick recovery and struggled a bit before I decided to hold my breath while going limp. I was beyond glad I was a swimmer! I could hold my breath for a pretty good amount of time. His grip on me loosened and once the rag was removed, I elbowed him in the rib as hard as I could.

Finally free, I ran into my room locking the door and slid my desk against it. I rushed into my bathroom and locked that door as well frantically calling 911.

“Stop ticking!” I growled angrily as my hands refused to halt its movements. I drew in a breath and pressed the phone to my ear tightly and reinforced it with the other.

“911 what is your emergency?”

“There is a man in my house trying to kidnap me!”

“Try to stay calm. What is your address?”
