It all began when everyone was crowded around a bonfire.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The whole neighborhood and surrounding had came, bringing marshmallows and sparklers to light. There couldn't have been anyone older than 25.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were all young and careless, not having a worry about studies or responsibilities. It was ideal, almost perfect.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That was the first time I met Jungkook. Officially.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He was one of the youngest there, and so was I. However, my social status was on a higher level than his, yet he seemed content where he was.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jungkook had been the first to break into the bag of marshmallows, a chorus of cheers ringing out into the night sky by everyone. He took his time to hand them out to everyone who came to running up to him with sticks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Yah, there's only one left," I whined, pouting playfully up at Jungkook. I had been the last in line.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A sweet smile spread to him face, his straight teeth catching on his bottom lip. "Take it... um..."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At this time, he didn't know my name.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Benji," I replied, my eyes flickering from the last marshmallow in his hands back to his eyes. I raised my eyebrows to him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There was a long pause before his too raised. "Oh! Jungkook, Jungkook." He grinned way too sweetly, but cute.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Okay, Jungkook, no, I won't. You were the one who wanted it first, you know?"
⠀
He just shook his head, and nodded toward a small bag by the pile of logs for the fire. It was only a few yards away. "Nah, there's more anyway. Here."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jungkook already had a stick tucked under his arm, which he stabbed the marshmallow onto before walking over to the roaring fire.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I couldn't help but gaze at his eyes, seeing the reflection of the flame flicker and crackle. He never once looked back at me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Suddenly, I heard him 'tsk' as Jungkook pulled the stick away from the fire. "Nice and toasty, Benji." He took a moment to blow on the marshmallow before pulling it off, then blowing on it some more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I could feel my mouth forming into a smile I couldn't control.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Ah!" He grinned down to the marshmallow before holding out for me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I took a step closer before gripping the sweet between my teeth, my lips wrapping around Jungkook's fingers. Slowly, I pulled my bite away, eyes keeping focused on his that were now gradually growing wider.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My mouth made a smacking sound, content that it hadn't left any traces of marshmallow behind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So maybe I was a little forward, but I had fell for Jungkook. He was almost a mystery.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He had always been in the neighborhood it seemed, yet I never saw him around our small town. It had only been the summer of 2017 that he came out to one of Namjoon's gatherings.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The youth in our town always loved a good time, but Jungkook never came.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Thanks," I finally said to him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
His doe eyes blinked as he shook his head. "Yeah... yeah," his words trailed off.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The night continued, Namjoon connecting his phone to the speakers of his car while he blasted western alternative and indie music. Many of us danced, and I tried to get Jungkook to do so with me. It ended up with him just awkwardly moving his feet, looking around at his surroundings.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was certain he was making sure no eyes were on him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"You need to loosen up, Jungkook-ah," I laughed, grabbing his hands and shaking his arms. His head snapped around to look at me. "No one cares what anyone is doing."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He bit his bottom lip, eyes flickering between the both of mine. "Sorry."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I waved him off, pulling him closer to me. "Apology not accepted."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My arms hooked around his neck, swaying back and forth to the music as he held my hips. "Just focus on me," I told him. "Okay?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He nodded, eyes never leaving mine. His brown gaze sparkled, pink lips inviting enough for a kiss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Normally, I would be down to kissing a stranger, but not Jungkook. First of all, he seemed like the person who would be on the contrary of that. Second, I cared more about knowing the boy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With that, I began to believe he felt the same. Especially since that night wasn't the last I heard from Jungkook.
