I sat in the waiting room, obviously waiting. It was 10:00PM, and still, no one had informed me on my mom. I was hoping to glob that she was still alive. The sound of a door opening brought me back to reality, and I looked up. A doctor had walked out, and I hoped he was coming to talk to me. But he walked right past me and on to an older woman. Her eyes were red and puffy, so I didn't doubt she had been crying. The doctor said something quietly, and right afterwards she burst into tears.
"No!" the older lady screamed. "Eric! My Eric is gone! My own husband! No!" She fell onto the ground and broke down. I felt so sorry for her. Her husband must have died, and now she was an old widow. What was she going to d-
My thoughts were cut off by a soft tap on my shoulder. I jumped slightly and turned to see who it was. A middle aged man with a white lab jacket on had his hand resting on my shoulder. He had a name tag on hid pocket reading DR. MARTINEZ. I asked him how my mom was doing.
" I'm sorry ma'am.... but your mom... shes...well...," his voice trailed off.
"No," I said in disbelief. "She can't be," I couldn't think straight. She couldn't be gone. How could she just leave me here to fend for myself? She wouldn't leave me yet. I wasn't ready.
" I'm sorry ma'am but... she's gone.... I truly am sorry," the doctor said, sympathy rushing over his face. I still didn't believe him.
" Let me see her. She has to be okay!" I yelled. Anger was taking hold of me now.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I'm telling you the tru-"
" Show me where she is! I need to see my mom!" I screamed. This doctor was really getting on my nerves now. He wouldn't let me see her, so I pushed past him and ran through the doors he came from.
I ran through the dark hallways, looking through each door as I ran. I finally got to the room with my mom in it, and someone was pulling a sheet over her face. I ran in and pulled the sheet off her face. Her face was gray and lifeless. She looked so old and fragile. I lightly shook her. But she didn't move.
"Mom!" I yelled, hoping she would wake from the trance she was in. "Mom!!" I yelled again, this time louder. The nurse that I had pushed out of the way came up behind me and pulled me away.
"You shouldn't be in here," she said calmly. I tried to pull away from her, but she wouldn't let go. The nurse slowly pulled me out of the room, struggling to hold on to me.
"Let go of me!!" I screamed. "Let go!" but she wouldn't. I was dragged out the doors and held down in a chair. Tears started pouring down my face. Everyone there was staring at me, but I didn't care. I had seen it now, and it was true. My mom was dead.My mom was gone. The woman that looked after me, that gave me food and shelter, that raised me. Gone.
Everyone was trying to say comforting words to me, but i couldn't hear them. All I could hear was the words the doctor had previously said to me: "I'm sorry ma'am.... but your mom... shes...well...," I had been in the waiting room, thinking she was fine. But she wasn't. She was dead. I felt as if it was all my fault. I didn't save her from the fire, I didn't do anything to help her. I could have woken up early and stopped her from going to work. But instead, I slept peacefully while she burned painfully in the hospital.
I looked up and saw Jane walk through the doors. She saw me, and walked over. Her eyes were red, and her cheeks were tear stained. Her arms reached out, and she embraced me in a big hug.
" It's going to be alright, baby. You can come live with me for now. It's gonna be all right," she said, trying to soothe me.
" It's all my fault..," I whispered. " I could have stopped her this morning, but instead I chose to sleep in." Jane looked up quickly, and her sad expression turned to a stern, no nonsense face.
"Girl, don't you dare be blaming yourself for this. Ain't no one coulda' stopped it. You hear me now?" she asked, giving me a firm shake. I nodded my head softly. I didn't agree, but I didn't feel like arguing with her. She nodded too, and stood up.
"Come on now, baby. You can come with me to my house tonight," she said. I stood up and followed her out the doors. As she unlocked her car, I looked up. There was a row of windows at the very top of the building. My mom was right behind one of them. I looked at one of them, and there was a man standing right next to it, gazing down. I couldn't be sure, but it seemed like he was staring at me.
"You going to get in the car?" Jane asked. I looked down and saw she had the car turned on and was waiting on me to get into the car. I got in, then looked up at the window. The man was gone. I watched the window as we pulled out of the parking lot and down the road. I had a feeling i would meet that mad again. I also had a feeling I wouldn't be here for much longer. And I was completely correct.
