I wandered the Halls of the hospital, quite bored with myself. Captain Aviator was banged up pretty badly but finally stable. Now I just had to wait until he recovered enough to take him home. As I walked I noticed a shadow up ahead. As I got closer I realized it was a man, looking distressed, sitting with his back to the fish tank. He was dressed completely black, with black hair and bright green eyes for the tiniest speck of contrast.
I didn't know him, but the second he saw me he jumped up, looking quite panicked. Then I noticed the tattoo on his wrist that stuck out from the rest. It was Dr. Relatin's, the famous super-villain and the reason Captain was in the hospital.
"You're here." I deadpanned.
He straightened just a bit, proclaiming his right to be here, visibly standing his ground. "I am. It's a public hospital, anybody can come here."
"True. But you're not 'anybody'. Why are you here?"
"Your sweet Captain wasn't the only one injured, you know."
"Fair enough."
We stared at each other for what seemed like hours. I knew I should take him down, get him arrested, right here in this waiting room! But for some reason, I couldn't. Maybe it was my own exhaustion, maybe it was the cast that held up his right arm (that more than likely either I or Captain caused), but I couldn't bring myself to initiate a fight with him.
I shuffled over to the fish tank and sat down. For some reason, he did the same. I think we were thinking the same thing.
Knowing that neither of us had any place to go and both were too tired to fight, I attempted casual conversation in the form of a friendly, non-controversial topic to start us off.
"That was some fight today, huh?"
He chuckled just a little. "Sure was."
"I'm surprised there wasn't more damage."
This time he outright laughed. "You're kidding, right? We ripped up that whole skyscraper!"
I laughed too. We continued talking for quite awhile. About the fight, about the hero/villain rivalry, about our bosses.
"Captain Aviator is great, a terrific superhero." I said at one point.
"But...?" the henchman prodded.
"But he's so hard headed! He never teaches me anything, it's like I'm just some kind of glorified secretary."
He groaned. "Same."
I was a bit surprised. "Really? Dr. Relatin makes you live next to the filing cabinet too?"
"Not quite. I'm what you call a jack of all trades, I do whatever he needs or wants. Which means if he's working on some new project and needs a test subject I swallow my sanity and take the plate."
"Wow, that sounds both dangerous and less fun than filing. I guess we both have terrible bosses."
No sooner had I said this did I hear a nurse call my name. I stood up and she walked over to me.
"Mr. Aviator is awake and asking for you, Miss Swanson."
I sighed. "Duty calls," I said with a shrug. "I guess I'll see you next time your boss decides to attack this area."
"Guess so." He said with a grin.
I started to leave, but quickly realized I'd forgotten something
"Hey! What's your name?"
"Donavon, don't tell anybody. What's your name?"
"Alisha and I'm in line with the law, so you can tell whoever you want."
