(Lucas to side)
Chapter 4
I stared at Lucas with my mouth agape for who knows how long, trying to form words. "My- my what?" I finally managed.
"Fiancé. You know, the person you are engaged to? Well, in our case, betrothed to." Lucas said matter-of-factly. I was so upset that he had forgot to mention this teeny tiny detail about our engagement, that I turned and started swimming to shore. He grabbed my wrist, and I turned and slapped him. He looked so surprised, I felt a surge of triumph. I took that little time the distraction had bought me to escape.
"Come back, Kaitlyn!" Lucas shouted. But I was too far away for him to catch up. I found a deserted strip of the beach and got out of the water and changed back. I headed back to the mall to change. I drove home and found a note waiting.
Kaitlyn-
We are at the beach. We are going to be home around 12:30. See you then!

ready. I locked the bathroom door behind me, stripped, and hopped into the steamy hot water. I washed my hair as I processed everything from this morning. I was a princess. My biological father was the king of Aquaratis. Lucas was a merman. I was engaged to him. I felt a bit nauseous trying to think about this all at once. I got out, wrapped myself in a towel and headed to my room. I shut the door behind me and turned. I screamed. Lucas was inside of my room.
"Lucas! What the heck are you doing here? Leave! I am only in a towel so get out!" I yelled.
He raised his eyebrows, looking very sexy, I may add. "Your dad gave me the key, so I could work around the house. No. And I am very aware of that fact," he replied to all my statements. He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively at the last part.
I rolled my eyes, disgusted. "Get out. Now."
He payed attention to the lethal tone of my voice and left. I sat down on the edge of my bed and rubbed my temples. What did I do wrong in my life? Did my parents know I was a mermaid? Was that why they always kept me out of the water? Did they know I was a princess? I sighed deeply and went to my closet to change. I pulled on a navy and white striped flowyshorts. I put on some white tennis shoes. I then slipped on a silver necklace with an oval pendant and some earrings to match. I went into the bathroom and fishtail braided my hair and grabbed my blue purse. I walked out of my room as my parents and Timmy were walking into the house.
"Hey, honey!" my mom cooed, "Did you get anything at the mall?"
"Not really," I replied nonchalantly, "Just did a bit of window shopping." At this, Lucas walked in and raised his eyebrows. I gave him a warning look. We had a silent conversation that went like this:
Me: Don't say anything. That's my cover story.
Lucas: They don't know?
Me: Of course not, you dummy! If your parents were regular mortals, would you tell them that you grew a tail whenever you went into saltwater?
Lucas: Well no....
Me: That's what I thought.
I turned back to my parents. "Did you have a good time at the beach?" I asked innocently.
"Oh yes!" my mother gushed, "It was beautiful! I wish you could have come but-," she cut off abruptly, realizing she had said too much.
"But what?" I asked. It was time to confront them. Lucas gave me a look that said 'You really wanna do this?' I nodded to him. He walked over to me and put his arm around my waist. Normally, I would be pushing him off of me but I was thankful for his show of support. "Why do you not let me go in the water? There is something very fishy going on-" at this Lucas snickered at my unintended pun "-and I think I know what." My parents eyes widened and my mother leaned down and whispered in Timmy's ear. He nodded and went to his room. They turned back to me.
