"Love?" I questioned as he looked away shyly. "A love for what?" He didn't answer and I was getting frustrated. "Mitch please talk to me!" I screamed, pulling on his hoodie slightly.
"That's the part I don't want to tell you," he whispered.
"Why won't you tell me? What's such a big secret you keep it from your Bacca?" I asked, voice cracking at the end.
"Jerome..." He sighed. "If I tell you, you'll hate me."
"I would never hate you. If you told me you killed my family I probably still wouldn't hate you," I said with a slight fear. I had a feeling I knew what he meant, and he hesitated. Then Mitch mumbled something I couldn't quite make out. "What?" I asked him cautiously, and he looked away.
"I love you, Jerome..." He whispered. I took a slight step back from shock. I thought about all those times we've joked about being a couple, how many times we've laughed about Merome, and I suddenly realized, it wasn't a joke to him.
"You...what?" I gasped. Mitch then fell to the floor, hands grabbing his hair as the tears pricking his eyes finally fell.
"I knew it!" He screamed. I bent down besides him and put my hand on his back, but he moved away.
"Know what?" I asked softly, not wanting for him to yell more.
"You don't love me back!" He cried. My heart broke into a million pieces that would take time to stitch back together. Seeing his scared face, him crying out to me like this, it hurt.
"Yes I d-"
"No!" He screamed as he covered his ears. "No you don't!" I wrapped my arms protectively around him and he didn't bother pushing me away. He just cried into my shoulder as I rubbed calming circles in his back.
"Hey Mitch?" I whispered in his ear. "Mitch? Answer please." He shook his head and I sighed, pulling away from him. "Mitch..." He hesitated for a moment and finally sighed.
"You don't love me Jerome. I know you don't. " He whimpered. I let my thoughts process for a second. Did I really love this man? I think I knew the answer.
"Yes Mitch, I do love you," I told him and he looked at me wide eyed. Then his eyes filled with rage as his body tensed.
"You're lying..." He hissed. I hugged him.
"No! I promise I'm not!" I cried, but he pushed me away.
"You are lying!" Mitch yelled. I put my head in my hands as the tears came again.
"Please! You have to believe me!" I yelled. I saw him hesitate and reach out for just a second, and then he pulled his arm back in close, grasping it.
"Why are you doing this to me?!" He screamed with agony as he looked at the floor. "Why can't you tell me the truth?!" Tears blurred my vision as I tried to speak, but the pain in my throat wouldn't let any noise escape. He looked at me, rage slowly slipping away from his glare as his expression softened. Mitch then bounded forward and I embraced him as we both burst into tears. "You're...you're not lying...?" He cried. I shook my head and he smiled. "I'm sorry," he sighed.
"Mitch..." I choked out. "I love you so much...Please don't..." I said. He knew what I was referring to.
"It's okay. I'm not going to any more. I have you now..." He said through hiccups. I laughed slightly, wiping away some of his tears as we both smiled. Then I leaned in and whispered into his ear.
"You have me now biggums. I'll never leave you..."
