CHAPTER THREE: THE ONE WHERE ROSE THINKS OF BUILDING A CASTLE
The gang sat in central perk, the girls sat near each other on one side while the boys sat near each other on the other side. "What you guys don't understand is for us, kissing is most important as any part of it." Monica started.
"Yeah, right." Joey commented. Joey laughed but soon stopped when he saw the girls' faces. "You serious?" He came to an end looking at Rose. Rose nodded her head. "Oh, yeah." Phoebe replied.
"Everything you need to know is in that first kiss." Rachel nodded. "Absolutely."Monica agreed. "Yeah I think for us kissing is pretty much like an opening act you know? It's like the stand up comedian you have to sit through before pink Floyd comes in." Chandler explained.
"Yeah, and it's not that we don't like the comedian, it's just that that's.. that's not why we bought the tickets." Ross added. "The problem is, though after the concerts over no matter how great the show was you girls are always looking for the comedian again. I mean we're in a car, fighting traffic. Basically, just trying to stay awake." Chandler finished.
"Yeah well word of advice bring back the comedian. Otherwise next time you're going to find yourself sitting at home listening to that album alone." Rachel responded. "Up top, Sister." Rose grinned holding up her hand as Rachel high-fived it.
Joey held a confused expression, tapping Ross' leg. "Are we still talking about sex?" He asked. Ross gave the Italian a thumbs up.
❁
After the gang had left, Rose bid goodbye before going to the shops to get Monica's supplies for the night, their parents were coming to visit and she wanted it to be perfect. Rose had noticed Monica's nervousness that morning trying her best to calm her down.
Rose returned to the building walking up to her apartment. She held two handfuls of shopping bags pushing the door open with her foot. "Hi, hi, hi." She greeted earning smiles from her friends.
"Let me help you with those." Joey helped taking the bags from his best friend. "Thank you Joe. Hey Mon." Rose waved. Monica gave her a quick hi and a hug as she walked around her sitting room, fluffing pillows and making sure everything was spot clean.
"Rose, Your sister is going crazy." Phoebe pointed out. "Is she fluffing pillows again?" Rose asked grabbing an apple from the counter. "Yep." Chandler answered. "It's probably because our parents are coming. Mom always does that."
Rose leaned her back against Joey's chest, his chin resting on her head. "I don't want to give them any more ammunition than they already have." Monica told them. "Yes, and we all know how cruel a parent can be about the fluffiness of a child's pillow." Chandler joked standing up.
"Monica? Hi. Um, Monica? You're scaring me." Phoebe squeaked. "I mean, you're like all chaotic and twirly, you know? And not in a good way." She continued. Rose and Joey made their way to Monica's side. "Yeah, calm down." Joey placed his hand on her shoulder.
"You don't see Rose and Ross getting all chaotic and twirly every time they come." Joey reminded her. "That's because as far as my parents are concerned. Rose and Ross can't do no wrong. The R siblings. You see he is a prince and she's their princess. Apparently they had this big ceremony before i was born for Ross." Monica explained walking back and forth in the kitchen.
"Ew, Ew, Ew, EW." Chandler repeated pointing out the window. "What?" Monica asked. "Ugly naked guy got a thigh master." Rose, Joey, Phoebe and Monica moved slowly towards the window. "Ew.." They grimaced.
"Has anybody seen my engagement ring?" Rachel asked after coming out of her room. "Yes, and it's beautiful." Phoebe answered. "Phoebs I don't think that's what she means.." Rose placed her hand on the blonde's shoulder.
"Oh." She realised, her mouth forming an O shape.
"Oh, god. Oh, god." She mumbled, she dropped to her knees searching around the sofa. "Don't touch that." Phoebe warned. "Oh, like I wasn't dreading tomorrow enough. Having to give it back to him. 'Hi Barry remember me? I'm the girl in the veil that stomped on your heart in front of your entire family.' Now i'm going to have to return the ring without the ring which makes it way much harder." She whined.
"Easy Rach We'll find it. Won't we?" Monica asked her sister and the two boys. "Yeah." They jumped up reaching down the sofa and under the tables to find for the wedding ring.
"All right, when did you have it on last?" Joey asked. "Doy, probably right before she lost it." Phoebe replied. "You don't get a lot of 'doy' these days." Chandler joked.
"No I had it this morning and I know I had it when I was in the kitchen with.." She thought out loud walking towards the kitchen and stopped by Monica's dish. "Oh, don't be mad." She mumbled. "You didn't." Monica retorted.
"Oh, I'm sorry." "I gave you one job." Monica snapped picking up the dish to hold over her head, scanning the bottom of the dish. "Oh, but look how straight those noodles are." Rachel said trying to lighten the mood.
"Monica you know, that's not how you look for an engagement ring in a lasagne." Chandler pointed out. "I just can't do it." Monica replied placing down the plate. Rose hugged her sister. "Boys? We're going in." Chandler announced as he Joey and Phoebe dug in.
Rose stood by her sister with her in her arms until a knock on the door echoed through the room. "Hi." Ross breathed when the door opened, his face full with sorrow and misery. "Oh, that's not a happy hi." Monica sighed. "What's wrong Rossy." Rose frowned.
"Carol's pregnant." Monica and Rose's jaws dropped to the ground. They couldn't believe their big brother's ex lesbian wife was pregnant with his child. "Ooh, I found it." Phoebe jumped holding the ring between her slim fingers.
"Well.. What, What..?" Monica stumbled. "Yeah.." Ross answered. "Heh.. whaa.. How." Rose stuttered. "Do that for another two hours and you might be where I am right now." Ross stared ahead gloomy walking slowly into the apartment.
"Kind of puts that whole pillow thing in perspective, huh, Mon?" Chandler joked. "How do you fit into all of this?" Rachel asked the oldest Geller. "Well Carol says she and Susan want me to be involved but if i'm not comfortable with it, I don't have to be involved. Basically it's up to me." Ross responded, his sisters guided him to the couch.
"She's great, I miss her." Phoebe thought out loud. Everyone turned to her giving her a look. "Well, what does she mean by involved?" Monica asked.
"Presumably the biggest part of your job is done." Chandler said. The Geller siblings sat down one on each side of their big brother. "Anyway, they want me to go down to this sonogram thing with them tomorrow." Ross said.
"What will you do?" Rachel asked. "I have no idea." He answered. Rose didn't know how her brother felt, she wanted him to live his best life but could tell he had no idea what to do. "No matter what i do though i'm still going to be a father." He continued as Monica rubbed this shoulder comfortingly.
The group heard cluttering behind them as they all turned their heads slowly to see Joey eating the lasagne. Joey soon noticed the stares he was receiving, he stopped his fork mid air, in front of his lips. "This is still ruined right?" He asked going back to eating.
❁
Later on that evening Jack and Judy arrived at their children's apartment to have dinner. "Oh, Martha Ludwin's daughter is going to call you. Hmm, What's that curry taste?" Judy asked taking a taste of the food Monica had made. "Curry." Monica replied.
"I think they're great. I really do." Ross said stuffing them in his mouth."You remember the Ludwins. The big one had a thing for you, didn't she?" Jack asked. Ross stood up. "They all had a thing for him." Judy waved off. Rose started to laugh hard clutching her stomach after, taking a few deep breaths.
"Oh, Mom." Ross replied. "I don't know what you're laughing at Rose, Their son had a thing for you too." Ross said. Rose shrugged flicking her hair over her shoulders. "What can I say?"
"I'm sorry why is this girl going to call me?" Monica asked confused. "She just graduated and she wants to be something in cooking or food or.. I don't know. I told her you have a restaurant." Judy told her daughter.
"No, Mom, I don't have a restaurant. I work in a restaurant." Monica replied. Rose loved her parents but happened to feel like they treated Monica different from her and Ross. She felt sorry for her older twin.
"Well, they don't need to know that." Judy replied. Monica rolled her eyes. She looked back at her mother seeing her fluff the pillows. "Ross, could you come help me with the spaghetti please?" Monica asked giving him a look.
Ross walked into the kitchen to talk to Monica while Rose stayed back to distract them. "Oh, we're having spaghetti. That's.. easy." She commented. Rose sat next to her mom. "So darling, How's work?" Judy asked. "It's going great actually." Rose grinned. Rose is a lawyer, people don't find it surprising as you seem because of her good arguing skills and and persuasiveness.
"You have to come visit us soon, Rosaline." Her father added, Rose nodded telling them that she will think about it. Monica had soon finished her spaghetti as the five of them sat around her table. "What that Rachel did to her life. We ran into her parents at the club. They weren't playing well." Judy spoke at the table.
"I'm not going to tell you what they spent on that wedding, But $40,000 is a lot of money." Jack added. "With that amount of money I would build a castle." Rose spoke twirling her spaghetti with her fork. "Could I live there?" Monica asked. "Hell yeah." Rose nodded.
"What about me?" Ross smiled. "Err, no." Rose grimaced. Monica laughed quietly at her brother's hurt face. Their parents didn't hear the conversation they had had as they continued eating their food.
"Well, at least she had the chance to leave a man at the altar." Judy mumbled sorting out her napkin. Rose looked up from having her head down giving her sister a sorry look. Monica set down her fork trying to suppress her anger.
"Ma.." Rose started but was cut off by her older sister.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Monica said. "Nothing." Judy replied, She placed a smile on her face staring back at her middle child. "It's just an expression." She continued, still with a smile plastered on her face.
"No it's not." Monica said. "Don't listen to your mother. You've always been independent. Even when you were a little kid and were chubby and had no friends you were just fine." Jack responded. Monica nodded slowly. Rose looked at her sister sadly glaring at Ross to speak up.
"And you would read alone in your room, and your puzzles. While Rose was out and spending time with her friends." Jack said before eating his food.
It was half and hour later and dinner was still going on. Not only had Rose's parents not finished eating, she was becoming very tired but tried her hardest to stay awake. Every time her eyes start to close Ross would flick her.
"Look there are people like Ross and Rose who need to shoot for the stars with his museum and his papers getting published and Rosaline interpreting laws for individuals and businesses. Other people are satisfied with staying where they are. I'm telling you, these are people who never get cancer." Jack told.
Rose rested her head on her palm as it slid sending her head slamming onto the table. "Rosaline!" Judy shouted. "Huh. Ya I'm here." She replied tiredly raising her hand but let it fall slowly to her side once she realised where she was. "Rosaline, dear you need to get some sleep." Judy told her. Rose nodded giving her mother a sarcastic thumbs up which she didn't see.
"So, Ross, what's going on with you?" Monica asked resting her chin on her palm leaning towards her brother. "Any stories?" She pressed down her elbow solid on his hand earning a yelp from the lanky man.
"Yes, Please do say." Rose joined in giving him a glare that had always frightened him when they were younger. "Okay, okay." He agreed snatching his hand from under Monica's elbow, rubbing the pain away. He stood up walking to stand in the middle of his parents.
"Look, I realise you guys have been wondering what exactly happened between Carol and me, and so, well.. Here's the deal." He took a deep breath. "Carol's a lesbian" He announced waiting for their reaction. "She is living with a woman named Susan. She's pregnant with my child and she and Susan are going to raise the baby."
The two parents stared at each other somewhat shocked. Judy turned to Monica placing her hand on her arm. "And you knew about this?" She asked. Rose threw her arms up shaking her head, leaning back in her chair waiting and wanting to disappear.
❁
The seven friends sat in Central Perk, Rachel working as the rest sat. Rose laid down next to Monica. "Folks are really that bad, huh?" Joey asked. Rose nodded pouting. Joey laughed quietly at his best friend's adorable face making the same pouting face at her.
"Well, you know these people are pros. They know what they are doing. They take their time. They get the job done." Ross spoke. "You done." Rose deadpanned looking at her older brother. "Yeah." He mumbled. Chandler and Joey laughed.
"I know they say that you can't change your parents. Boy, if you could I'd want you guy's parents." Monica said pointing at her two siblings. Ross got up and kissed his two sister's foreheads. "Must pee." He said simply walking out the room.
"It's even worse when you're twins." Phoebe said. "I mean when you don't like each other." "You're a twin?" Rachel asked. "Yeah, she is I've met her." Rose added, Phoebe and Rose were very close.
"Yeah, we don't speak. She's this high powered driven, career type." Phoebe explained. "What does she do?" Chandler lazily asked. "She's a waitress." Phoebe said quick to respond. "All right guys, I've kind of got to clean up now." Rachel said.
"You're an only child right? You don't have this." Monica asked Chandler. "Well, no. Although i have an imaginary friend who my parents actually preferred." Chandler answered as everyone except Rachel left. Joey held the door open for everyone and smiled as the last person had a smile on her face standing in front of him.
"Come on Rosie." Joey said wrapping his arm around her shoulders holding her close. Rose wrapped her arm around his waist snuggling close to him due to the icy cold air nipping at her skin. Joey rubbed her arms as they walked home.
