"Who would've thought that our little tomboy would be getting married first," said my mother in an excited tone. Heck, I was excited too.
Who would've thought that the youngest of the Zulu's would be getting married first, especially because my sister look like beauty queens. What Willem and I did was a little unconstitutional, you can't ask a black girl to marry you without asking for permission from her father but alas, Willem would be meeting my family tomorrow for dinner.
"How did you and Willem meet, what does he do for a living and where is he from?" my sister, Kate, asked. Everyone was so happy and taken aback by the fact that I, Kaitlyn Zulu, would be getting married first.
"You can ask him all those questions when he arrives, in the meantime I'm gonna go get my beauty sleep."
We all said our good nights and went to bed.
The next morning we had breakfast as a family and I went shopping with my sisters.
"Tell us about this mysterious Willem Grobbelaar," said Kerry, my oldest sister.
"Grobbies is the sweetest guy I've ever met. He makes me feel like I'm worth all the love and all the attention I get. He's smart, respectful, funny, loving and he's always there to support me. Funny, he was my human anatomy partner and we didn't get along."
Willem was like a mosquito the first time I met him and I absolutely hated his guts. The worst mistake they made was assigning us as lab partners because we both liked working independently. He was a know it all guy from Cape Town and I hated being wrong, I was that student that studied ahead and corrected the teacher. I'm a hardcore nerd who's in love with the human body and anything associated with repairing it. It did not come as a surprise when I told my parents that I wanted to be a doctor. Willem and I finally buried the hatchet in our fourth year when we were placed in the same group when we were working the night shift. I realized that he wasn't as bad as I made him out to seem and now I get butterflies in my stomach whenever I think about him.
"You are clearly head over heels in love with this guy because your face lights up when you talk about him," said Kate, "I'm really happy for you munchie. You deserve to be happy after everything you've been through."
I'm not exactly the luckiest person when it comes to love and I've always sucked at dating. The last guy I dated cheated on me with my roommate and just when I thought things were bad, she told me that she was pregnant with his baby. It took so much for Willem to get to the place that we're currently at just because of the boy trouble I've been through.
"So have you guys started planning the wedding?" asked Kerry, my oldest sister.
"Not yet, his mum said that she would help us organize the wedding once Willem has met mum and dad."
"You're such a lucky girl."
We spent the rest of the day catching up and having lunch at the food court in the mall. My sisters meant a lot to me and I felt so blessed to spend the day with them.
