I Just Can't

Annie's POV

The entire weekend I was absolutely dreading school the next week. When I hopped on the bus, I thought to myself, "How on earth am I allowing this week to start, do something to stop it ANNIE!" But of course here I am on my way to school, sitting next to McKenna, with my backpack, eating a granola bar. I was just minding my own business, when suddenly I heard a bratty voice come from behind me,
     "Excuse me! I have a question for you Annie!" Savanna says.
     "What is it?" I say as I slyly roll my eyes.
     "So, I know you're dating Chase and all, but I just hope you know, that it probably won't last very long..." she says.
     "How on earth did you find out about that?" I whisper, making sure none of my friends hear.
     "I have my ways sweetie." She says through her teeth in her fake smile.
     "For your information, we aren't really dating, and you better not tell-" I start, but then I decide to stop myself, because I know that she will do the exact opposite of what I say.
     "Oh, you don't want me to tell anyone? Well... my lips are sealed!" She smiles again.
     "Ok then, bye..." I say as I turn my back to her and face McKenna. Savanna walks off.
     "Wait, you're dating Chase?" McKenna says as her jaw drops down to the floor.
     "Shhh! I'm keeping it a secret, please don't tell anyone!" I nag.
     "Oh I won't, I promise!" She says. I put my earbuds in, and she does too.
     When I get to school I get a text from Chase,
Chase🔐💝: Heyyy, Annie meet me by the the cafeteria water fountains
Me: uhh I kinda got to get to class
Chase🔐💝: Come on, just for a quick sec
Me: I really have to be on time!
Chase🔐💝: u will be, just one sec
Me: ok fine
     When I arrive at the cafeteria water fountains, I see him standing there.
     "What's up, make it quick, I have to be to class in three minutes!" I say with a rush in my voice.
     "Oh hi! Right, umm ok so I uh got you this." He says as he pulls out a bracelet with a heart charm on it.
     "What's this?" I ask dumbly.
     "Well I got you this bracelet to symbolize... us." He says.
     "That's really sweet," I say with smile. He bites his lip, as he starts to lean in as if he's trying to kiss me. His lips get like an inch away from me, and my heart starts beating super fast. "I just can't!" I mumble.
     "Umm what?" He asks.
     "I just can't Chase, ya know, our talk was really great on Halloween, and I liked our friendship and all, but I can't kiss you, and I can't date you. I can't date anyone. It's just too much for me, don't get me wrong I had fun over the weekend, but I just want fun I don't want kisses, and bracelets and mall dates!" I shout as I back away.
     "What are you trying to say?" He asks.
     "I need to break up with you for now, it just can't be like this!" I yell.
     "Ok then, I'm sorry." He says with a somberness.
     "Me too!" I cry.
     "I'll see you around I guess..." he says as he starts to walk away.
     "Wait! I'll uhh, I'll pay you back for the bracelet, because you probably spent all that money on it and I just-" I begin.
     "Nah, its fine, bye Annie." He says. Tears start to pour down my face.
     "Bye..." I stutter. He was actually a really good guy, he was kind, cute, and he treated me right. "Why didn't I just kiss him? Why am I so incompatible? What's wrong with me? Why is Hayden the only guy I can think about?" I thought.
     Later that day at lunch, he didn't sit with us, he sat with the popular table again. Hayden and Julia didn't ask me why, I think they just assumed what happened. As I was daydreaming about how popular I could've became, I felt Hayden's foot nudge me under the table. I looked down to see a note sitting on my lap, somehow Hayden managed to write and set a note on my leg from the other side of the table, with nobody seeing. I read the note and it reads...
     "Walk with me to 4th hour, we have 2 talk!" I look at him and give him a slight nod, with which he receives very clearly.
     After lunch, Hayden and I walk to fourth hour together.
     "Hey, are you ok?" He asks. I look up at him and give him a smile.
     "Well, I was dating Chase if you didn't know already..." I say awkwardly.
     "Was?" He asks.
     "Uhh yeah, I broke up with him... it was just to much..." I say gloomily.
     "Oh, I'm sorry. I know I didn't seem that enthusiastic the other day about the idea of you two dating, but I'm genuinely sorry." He assures me.
     "Don't be sorry, it was my decision and I didn't want the relationship to happen... I just couldn't imagine myself being with him... I guess." I say.
     "Yeah, I understand that... is there somebody else who you like?" He asks quietly. I suddenly felt really awkward in the conversation.
     "Um no, I just didn't see it, you know..." I stutter awkwardly.
     "Yeah..." He mumbles.
     Once we arrived at our fourth hour, we talked the entire hour about random stuff, it kinda felt like it did when we were kids.
