Saving Yuri

I'm getting so much support and I only published this a day ago! What wonders 24 hours can produce..

Yuri pushes Monika out the door, glaring as the other girls left. She smiles manically when she turns to me, teeth flashing in the light.

"Finally. Finally!" Yuri exclaims, turning towards me with unsettling enthusiasm. She calms herself down, smiling gently. "This is really all I wanted." She takes a step towards me. "Y/N, there's no need to spend the weekend preparing for the festival with Monika - just come to my house instead!"

I nod hesitantly, unsure what's come over her. Yuri could be a little obsessive at times, but never anything like this..

I'm brought back to focus by Yuri's excited rambling. "The whole day, just the two of us! Doesn't that sound wonderful?" She giggles madly. "Wow, there's really something wrong with me, isn't there?"

I stand completely still, petrified of what Yuri might do to me or herself if I do anything.

"But you know what? I don't care anymore!" Her eyes gleam. "I've never felt this good my whole life. Just being with you is a far greater pleasure than anything I could imagine. I'm addicted to you. It feels like I'm going to die if I'm not breathing the same air as you."

A flicker of her previous, shy demeanor returns. Yuri blushes, fiddling with a strand of her violet hair. "Doesn't it feel nice to have someone care about you so much? To have someone who wants to revolve their entire life around you?" She takes a deep breath. "But if it feels so good.. why does it feel more and more like something horrible is going to happen?"

I shrug timidly. Yuri doesn't heed my words, fully enamored with speaking her thoughts out loud and staring at me as if she's scanning me.

Yuri clutches her heart. "Maybe that's why I tried stopping myself at first.." she muses. She shakes her head. "The feeling is too strong now. I don't care anymore, Y/N!" she repeats what she said earlier with the exact same eagerness as before. "I have to tell you.." her voice trails off before she resumes her loud volume. "I'm.. I'm madly in love with you!" she practically shouts. "It feels like every inch of my body.. every drop of blood in me.. is screaming your name." She takes another deep breath. "I don't care what the consequences are anymore; I don't care if Monika is listening. Please, Y/N, just know how much I love you." She stalls for a moment. "I love you so much I even touch myself with the pen I stole from you." She gazes at me again. "I just want to pull your skin open and crawl inside of you."

The intensity of Yuri's words make me shiver, and the elation in her eyes doesn't help my trembling. Yuri is about to come undone. I can tell. The knot is almost untied..

She speaks again. "I want you all to myself. And I will be only yours. Doesn't that sound perfect?" She mellows, blushing delicately. "Tell me, Y/N. Tell me you want to be my lover. Do you accept my confession?"

I pause. If I refuse, Yuri might attack me in a fit. She seems completely on edge, and any procovation could set her off. I consider accepting instead; but if I do, what if she's overcome by passion and hurts herself or me?

I decide the safest thing is to accept.

Yuri's eyes are glowing with anticipation. I nod slowly, still startled by her sudden brashness. "Yes."

Yuri's eyes light up and she starts giggling. I stand still. Her simpering quickly escalates into delighted laughter, then to eager, then to insane -

Yuri's eyes go completely wide as she pulls out a large kitchen knife as shoves it towards her stomach.

I scream and lunge at her, knocking her down.

I feel pain in the palm of my hand as I realize Yuri's knife had cut me. I wince, but hold her down nonetheless. I look down at her. Yuri's panting and shaking, unrecognizable noises escaping her lips. I press my hand to chest, trying to calm her down. I realized I'm directly on top of her and shift so I don't squish her completely.

"Y/N -" she chokes, breathing quickly. "-why-?"

"I told you before, Yuri, I love you," I say, brushing the hair out of her face and placing my hands on her ribcage, trying to slow her heartbeat. "And if you truly love me, too, you would stop struggling. Seeing you hurt would hurt me."

She stops trying to push me away, going limp and staring at her knife, which was flung across the classroom in our struggle. It's stained with blood, which is luckily mine instead of hers.

Yuri visibly notices the blood, and looks at me. "Y/N, you're hurt!" she realizes. Her face softens, all traces of the disturbing enthusiasm from earlier gone. The knot is slowly being tightened.

I scoot farther off her, allowing her to sit up while still restrained. She extends her palm, and I give her my hand.

She inspects it closely, then meets my gaze with sad eyes. "I did this to you."

I shake my head. "It wasn't your fault."

"But it was, Y/N," she argues quietly. "If I hadn't almost made that fatal cut, you wouldn't be bleeding right now."

"Technicalities," I say nonchalantly, which makes her laugh softly. "I'd like to see something in return for you checking my hand." Realization dawns on her face.

"Y/N, no, I-" I ignore her stammering and grip her hand, rolling up her sleeves to reveal what seems like millions of scars.

"Y/N," she says in a broken tone. "I'm sorry, I-" Her tears wet my sleeve as I lean closer to look at her wounds. Some fresh with blood still oozing, some old with dried blood crusting around them. I examine her arm further. Some of these have to be months old.

"Yuri, how often do you hurt yourself?" I ask carefully.

"Only whenever I get too exhilarated," she exhales. "Which was whenever I was near you."

"Monika was right; I was enabling you," I nod, sighing to myself.

Yuri doesn't say anything as I stand, kick her bloodstained knife far away, and retrieve peroxide and bandages from my bag. I take Yuri's arm in my hand and start dabbing peroxide onto her scars and cuts.

She hisses through her teeth, pain not bringing her pleasure for the first time in assumed months. I wrap her arm carefully, trying my best not to prod any of her more sensitive cuts too harshly. Before long, Yuri's arm has gone numb and she's watching without pain in her eyes.

I roll her sleeve down and look her in the eye. "You love me, right?"

She blushes and nods.

"You believe I know what's best for you?" Another nod.

"Here's what I am completely certain is the best thing for you, Yuri," I say with sureness. "Cutting yourself isn't healthy, and stopping would be beneficial to your mental health."

She giggles quietly at the jab she took at Monika earlier. "Yeah, probably."

She sighs, shaking her head and put her face in her palms. "I can't believe I said those awful things to Natsuki and Monika."

I stroke her hair. "You weren't yourself. Something weird's been happening to everyone lately."

Yuri nods. "I've observed that as well. But.." she looks at me with hope and determination. "Something is different now; something that will change everything for the better."

"I hope you're right, Yuri." I offer her my hand, and she accepts it. I pull Yuri to her feet, and link my elbow with hers.

"Shall we, m'lady?" I ask with a funnily formal edge to my voice.

"We shall," she says, adopting her own accent.

We march regally out the doors and to the front entrance. Yuri pulls her arm back, looking at me with newfound courage.

"Y/N?" she asks.

"Mm?" I answer.

"Thank you," she presses a kiss to my cheek. "I promise not to harm myself intentionally ever again."

The sureness in her eyes convinces me of her guarantee. "I believe you."

Yuri smiles sweetly, and waves as she makes her way back home.

I wave back. I know she'll be safe.

The knot is securely fastened.

Three down, one to go.
