Kiryuu Zero has never experienced heartbreak.
His high school puppy love with Yuuki had broken his heart after she decided to date his twin brother instead. What a cruel thing to do, was what people always say. But Zero knew. He knew that the girl only had eyes on Ichiru but his brother was not into the said brunette. So he took this opportunity to confess his love, but the feeling of being with someone who sees you as a replacement was unpleasant. He broke up with her a few months and dates later, and even encouraged her to profess her love to his twin. It turned out well in the end and the both of them remained as best friends, both Yuuki and himself.
But that was nothing compared to the painstaking ache in his chest he felt.
Kaito's words fell out of his mouth like vapour but land in Zero's guts as shrapnel. He felt his insides tear, and the blood drained from his face.
“What?” Zero asked, breathless. He was sure his mind was playing tricks on him, he was hundred percent positive, but as the seconds tick on and Kaito's face doesn’t break out into a grin, Zero felt something constricting around his neck.
He couldn't breathe.
''I want to break up with you.'' Kaito repeated. His eyes were cold and calculating, nothing like the Takamiya Kaito he loved.
The small black box in Zero's palm weighed heavier and heavier. There was hard thud on the wood but neither of them moved to pick it up. Zero was trying to understand the words he said him but he couldn't.
“Why?” Zero can't bring himself to say much more than that. He wanted to ask more, wanted to know everything, everything, but he knew that he’ll break down right that moment if he asked something deeper.
''I don't love you anymore.'' Kaito said, his voice collected and distant as if he was talking to a stranger.
"You're kidding, right?" Zero asked, his voice shaking as Kaito's cold eyes met his for the last time.
"No, Zero, it's over." He slowly turned away. What? Just a few days ago they went on a date to the beach. They talked about getting engaged. They were smiling and laughing. They were so in love, they were so happy. Zero even refused an important S-class mission just to choose a pair of engagement rings.
Love. He thought they loved each other. They did, right? But it seems such intimate emotions was not reciprocated. Zero wondered how long Kaito has been harbouring these bitter thoughts as he clenched his fists tightly.
Swallowing down his tears, Zero nodded. His lips parted slightly, trying to voice out his thoughts, but his words were caught in his throat. He felt his tears welling up in his eyes despite his efforts and he forced his voice to remain steady. “Okay.” he manages with a shaky exhale.
As soon as he replied, he backed away and turned with heavy steps. He walked away, as calmly as he could manage, but as he turned down a hallway he broke out into a sprint. He ran, ran and ran. To where? He doesn't know. Zero just wanted to get away here, this place that he and Kaito called home.
Zero ran out from their apartment, into the heavy rain, soaking himself up as he let his tears fall. He kept going, forcing himself to run until his legs gave out. His breath hitched in his throat and he was desperate for air, causing him to loose balance.
He fell on his knees as his shaky fingers ran restlessly through his soaking wet and messed up hair. He bit down on his lip, trying to stop his tears from falling.
Zero sat motionless on the wet path, his arms hung loosely on his sides. He was unaware of the time that passed as he stared at the busy people running to dry areas to shade themselves from the rain. Some of them stopped to look at him, murmurs were heard and looks of curiousity as well as pity were given.
He continued to stare into abyss, unaware of the fact that his body was growing colder and colder and his eyelids were getting heavier and heavier as time passed.
''Zero?'' That was the last thing he heard before his world went completely black.
