i stared at myself in the mirror as i roughly brushed my wavy hair. i was waiting for my parents to come back to the hotel room to pick me up. they said we would be having a dinner with some of their friends who, like them, were doctors. i sighed, i really didn't want to be a part of this boring convention. i prefered to just stay home and hang out with my friends. i liked their company better anyway. i left the bathroom and looked for something to wear. surely they wouldn't mind if i wore a pair of jeans and a nice shirt? it was just dinner. besides, the attention wouldn't be on me. i'm pretty sure it will be on my older sister, who just entered med school. it was always like that, though. she was always the better one between the both of us and me. well, that's because i didn't stand out. my parents treated me like a baby despite being eighteen years of age.

as i finished my get-up, i heard my mother knock on the hotel room. "it's time to go, love!" she called. i went out of the room and greeted her with a hug. i have always loved my parents, even at their downfalls. hand in hand, my mother and i stalked to the elevator to the main entrance of the grand hotel. outside the doors and in the car, my father and my sister waited. we hopped in the car and took the trip.

"i love your blouse. where did you get it?" fizzy, my older sister asked me. i didn't know if she was being sarcastic or not but then i remembered that she was too nice to do that.

"i found it at a sale rack in asos. you can borrow it sometime if you want." i told her. she smiled at me and nodded. see, that's the thing with felicité amelia austin. she was too nice, the perfect daughter, sister, and friend. i wanted to be like her and one day, i know that i would make my parents proud just like the way she made them proud.

20:32. the clock read and we finally arrived to our destination. i mentally sighed in relief as i saw that it was just a simple restaurant. nothing fancy but nothing too casual. my family and i went inside to what they called greens. apparently, one of the doctors preferred it here because of their wide selection of healthy food. well, that was what my mum said. i nodded along to whatever she was saying until i saw a table full of other physicians. i knew they were, i could see aunt pia and her husband. we weren't really related but i figured it's necessary to call her that way give the the fact that i was closer to her than any of my other aunts. however, i always called her 'ma' just because her being an aunt is just too weird for me.

"the austins are here!" she announced which caused everyone to look at the four of us. i gulped and smiled uneasily, knowing that she knew i disliked attention. i immediately walked over to my aunt as i let my family greet the other doctors. i didn't really care, i wasn't interested in them.

"oh! there is my little girl!" aunt pia gushed as her arms encircled my whole body. i giggled in delight and told her that i missed her. she agreed and told me that she missed me too.

"you know what, doll? since we both miss each other so much, let's go on a girls' day out tomorrow. just you and i—let's leave fizzy to your parents." she proposed. i nodded to that. the thing was, aunt pia and her husband was never able to conceive a baby. perfectly enough, while they were mourning, i was born. aunt pia asked my mum if she could take care of me every weekend just so she would experience how to raise a child. mum agreed and i had the best childhood ever. sometimes, i even found myself wishing that they would fully adopt me instead but i know that's impossible.

"ma, who are we waiting for?" i asked her as i sat beside her.

"another doctor. i don't know if you know him but that guy is the youngest amongst all of us oldies here but i've got to say, he's got the most potential. don't tell anyone that, though. they don't like him just because he's better than them."

as if on cue, the whole table abruptly stopped their chatter and looked at the man in a green calvin klein sweater.

"that's him." my aunt whispered.
