Fever

Jasper never said anything back to me. So we just laid on the slightly sappy floor of the small cave in a sort of silence. Jasper's breathing was shallow and quick, whereas mine was deep and long. I stared up at the cave ceiling. I wondered what Jasper was thinking about. What went on inside that head of his? He really was strange. Very intriguing.

I wondered why he was out here.

Why was I even out here?

Recollection slowly came to my mind. The last thing I remembered from before, was waking up in the snow covered field. And before that...well. That was not a very good memory.

I remembered being in a hot, sweaty room with twenty other people. I was in gym class. It was extremely humid at this point, and, of course, the air conditioner was broken. The tight athletic shorts and t-shirt I was being forced to wear was not exactly helping me. The class was playing the dreadful game of dodge ball. My worst subject. Running around, being constricted by my shorts, the severe lack of cool air, and the dodge balls knocking the wind out of me were really taking a lot out of me. I couldn't imagine how the other kids were staying upright, let alone myself.

The class finally ended so I scurried back to the suffering locker room. Unfortunately, that meant I had to change back into my long-sleeved sweater, winter boots, and jeans. I changed as fast as I possibly could without falling over, somehow thinking that my speed would help me to not think about how lightheaded and overheated I felt...

After my buttons were buttoned and buckles were buckled, I walked outside to the courtyard as the last bell rang to leave. Wind immediately slapped my face and blinded me for a split second. Enough time for me to trip over a loose brick and fall on my face. Serious pain flooded my mind before I couldn't bring myself to wake up my arms and get off the rickety old bricks of my school grounds. I couldn't control it anymore. I passed out. After that, I woke up in the field.

And after that, I woke up in Jasper's arms.

And after that, I woke up in a cave.

I definitely was not having a good day. For me, good days did not come very often at all.

I looked over at Jasper.

My eyes widened and I turned my body towards him. His eyes were half lidded, his face was shaded red and blotchy, sweat was covering his neck and forehead. What happened?

"Jasper!" What was wrong? Something was wrong. Maybe it was just a fever.

His eyes shot wide and he sat up and crossed his arms. I sat up too, still watching his face carefully. Jasper's thick eyebrows furrowed as his lips stretched into a deep frown. My hand reached out to touch his cheek before I could stop it. His glowing eyes flashed to mine. I whipped my hand back to my body as if it had been burned by his skin, which it might as well had been. His cheek was burning up.

"You're hot," I quietly informed him.

"Thank you." I blushed at that one. Then I kicked him because he didn't understand what I meant.

"No! I meant your skin, Jasper. It's hot."

"I know, Jasmine." His voice came out strangled and broken. His golden eyes left my blue ones. "I just need to cool down, okay?" And with that, Jasper steadily stood up and took slow, calculated steps towards the entrance of the cave.

"You're going out there?" It was freezing! Maybe that was the point. Surely he wouldn't go that far out.

"I said I needed to cool off, didn't I?" I stood up and walked beside him as I pulled my sleeves over my palms.

"So you want to freeze?"

"No. Just cool off. This should do the trick pretty quickly."

One more step and he would be out from under the protection of the cave. The wind at full force. Snow blinding every step. From behind the mouth of the cave, I could already feel many of the effects of the storm. It was already too cold. I took a step back and to my left so I was behind the shielding body of Jasper.
