Misty crouched on a rock, rain spattering down from the sky. The rock was slicked with rain, and the air around her was foggy. Misty stood up and shook the wetness from her fur. She hated being wet. But she had to find somewhere safe for her pups to be born. Her brown eyes narrowed to slits as she peered through the sheets of water, trying to find her mate. "Shadow!" She called into the forest. Suddenly, he leapt up onto the rock from the opposite direction, a mouse hanging from his mouth. He dropped the dead prey at Misty's paws, and glanced around. "Thank you." Misty said to him as she took a bite from the mouse. It was still warm, and the juices seeped into her mouth. Shadow licked her ears and waited for her to finish eating. "We need to find a den." Misty said as water dripped onto her nose. Shadow nodded in agreement. Then, he set off into the woods. Misty shook out her fur again and followed.

Misty curled up in a pile of wet leaves. They had found a small den beside the stream. Hopefully, it wouldn't flood. Shadow had found clumps of wet leaves and moss, and brought them back for nests. Misty had helped him line the muddy den with it and cover the floor. Then, she had curled up in a corner of the dark den. It smelled of foxes, so it must have been an old fox den. Shadow laid down beside her, resting his muzzle on his small paws. Misty closed her eyes and let the steady patter of rain lull her to sleep.
