“She was just a wish, she was just a wish.” – Gypsy

June 1980

Stevie edged her way towards the door and slowly opened it, taking a deep breath as she did so. The tiny room, illuminated in the sunlight, was filled with some lace and paper flowers, and the smell of fresh paint still lingered in the air. It almost brought her to tears, it was so perfect!

One of the first things she noticed when she entered the room, was the exquisite glass frame hanging above the fireplace. She walked over to take a closer look at it; it was one of Lindsey’s music sheets, and one she remembered with a smile.

Stevie stepped out of the kitchen and into the hallway where Lindsey had thrown all of his things, ready to run out of the door and to the studio for his meeting with the producers. She spotted one of his music sheets and quickly scribbled down a note in the top right-hand corner. ‘I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date’,it read.

Just as she slipped the papers back into his case, Lindsey came pounding down the stairs in a fluster.

“Okay okay, I’m going now, I think I have everything!” he said, seemingly trying to reassure himself more than anyone else.

“I’m sure you do, and if you’ve forgotten anything call me and I’ll bring it in.” Stevie said with a smile, pulling him in for a tender goodbye kiss.

She let her lips linger on his just a little longer than usual, and she smiled against them.

“Mmm,” he moaned in pleasure, “What’s gotten into you this morning?”

Stevie just smiled and handed him his case full of music sheets. “Nothing at all!” she chuckled, “Have a nice day and I’ll see you when you get back.”

And with that he was gone, completely oblivious to what the rest of the day had in store for him. Stevie felt rather guilty for choosing to break the news today of all days, but she was bursting to tell him and she just couldn’t help herself!

The rest of the day was spent writing and recording little demo snippets for the band’s next album, but it wasn’t long before her imagination was racing once again, wondering whether he knew yet, whether he had seen the note, if he had understood it, and how he would react…

Much sooner than she had been expecting, Stevie heard the familiar sound of Lindsey’s car pulling into the driveway. She peered out of the kitchen window to check whether it really was him, but just as she did, she heard the latch on the front door click open. Lindsey hurled himself into the kitchen in search of Stevie and when he saw her, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing there, music sheet in hand, out of breath and brilliantly bright-eyed, Lindsey couldn’t find the words.

“Are you…?” he stuttered.

It only took Stevie’s teary smile and breathy laugh to confirm it to him. He launched himself towards her and swept her up into his arms, twirling her around high off the ground, his head buried deep in her luscious blond locks.

“You’re pregnant!” he bellowed. “I can’t believe it!”

Hearing him say it aloud made Stevie’s heart melt. After the torment of the abortion a few years before, she had never thought she and Lindsey would ever have the chance to have kids again. But they had been trying and wishing for so long, and now it had finally happened! It was a perfect moment, and neither of them wanted that feeling to end.
