                                                                       Kathy's POV:

My eyes slowly flutter open to face the new day. My back is sore from sleeping on the hard, cold ground all night long. It's been four months since that terrible day. The day my parents died. The day I ran away from my home with Nick. 'Nick...' I glance over at my best friend. His wavy black hair is all over the place in tangles and mats from being outside for four months straight. His black t-shirt and jeans are tattered and his shoes are caked with mud. I run my eyes over his tanned body, checking to see if there are any new injuries there. As I inspect Nick's body his emerald eyes slowly flutter open. "See something you like?" he says with his trademark smirk.

"You wish Mr. I miss getting laid", I smile. His eyes open in surprise, and I jump up and dash to the lake nearby.

"You're ganna get in now Kitkat!" he yells. Nick tackles me to the ground at the end of the lake and begins to tickle me.

"No!... Stop... you butt nugget!" I sequel in-between fits of laughter. He smirk's at my choice of insults and roles off of me. As I try to catch my breath I scan the surrounding area for danger. Two months on the run teach you always to be alert. The place we slept last night is a small patch of grass a bit higher up on the hill, hidden by tall blackberry bushes. Lapping at my feet is the crystal clear spring water lake, which Nick and I have been using for water. The wind and a few birds rustle the pine trees around us and a few ground animals scurrying around the ground stocking up for the fast approaching winter. Glancing over at my best friend I see him assessing the area for danger as well, always on the alert to protect me. A wave of gilt hits me; Nick did not always used to be like this. Before we ran away Nick used to be the it boy. All the girls loved him, and all the guys admired him. He was the top student at the Twi Kon Do club, he had good grades, every teacher thought him the perfect student, and parents used him as a role model. He was also the schools top heart breaker. Once on a dare he had a different girl in his bed for three weeks strait, sometimes even two at once. But because I was selfish and too scared to live on my own I ran to his house that faithful day, and practically begged him to accompany me while I flee from the man who killed my family. I am the reason Nick lost all of the fortune he had only two short months ago. I will never forgive myself for what I have taken away from him. However, I can't make myself force him to leave me. I need Nick like I need air, or a heartbeat.
