Nicks POV:
I survey my surroundings for any sign of danger, the trees, the ground, the sky, the lake, all clear. Being observant is the difference between life and death out here. 'Kathy's life or death', a little voice in my head mummers. I take a peek at by best friend, and notice that she is staring right through me with regret in her sapphire eyes. I know she thinks that my being out here is her fault; she blames herself for taking me away from my fake popularity, my so called friends, or the parents who nagged me to be the perfect little boy. Yuck. I don't really even miss the girls... much. I would have given up all of it in a half a heartbeat just to keep a smile on Kathy's face. A peace of her shiny, chocolate brown hair rubs against my cheek in the soft breeze and I instinctively push the lock back behind her ear. Kathy is not ugly, as she may think at times; she has a nice body, slim waist, round hips, and heart shaped face. She is as beautiful as a model, but a short one at that.
It is her personality that I love that best though, she is as kind as an angel, as witty as a fox, and a mischievous devil when she needs to be. She can pull her own weight and fight any challenge no matter how mountainous, but she is the most innocent girl I have ever met. Why else would she let a hormonal boy travel with her for the past two months and now worry about him sneaking peeks when she takes baths in the few lakes, or springs we come across.
"Come on, I think we have some bread and tomato soup left for breakfast. Then we will have to find a town and... prospect for more supplies", I yawned out after being awaken by Kathy's staring earlier. I knew she hated to do anything illegal, but we needed to stay hidden and still obtain the necessary items to live. My left hand had a mind of its own and aided her in getting up, then holding on to her a few moments longer than necessary with the ruse of helping her keep her balance.
After a breakfast of stale bread and hot tomato soup we packed up our small bags of declining necessities, and small first-aid kits. Then proceeded to set out on foot to the town we knew was about seventeen miles from here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first time we had robbed a store Kathy had been very reluctant, and the only way for me to convince her to help with the plan was to promise her that we would sleep in a real bed the night before the act. So that is why we found ourselves in the town of Kirate, outside of a small motel named Rose Soul. The front receptionist was obviously used to strange characters coming into the hotel and did not ask for any ID's. I paid for the small single bed room with money from pickpocketing I had done in the previous town.
The walls of room 15 were a deep red rose color with tan and black sheets and curtains. A simple queen sized bed sat in the middle of the room with dark wood tables on either side of the bed. A small desk sat in the corner of the room, a dresser sat on the other wall with a small TV on it facing the bed, and a small in-suite bathroom connected on the side with the desk.
"Yes! A bed!", screamed Kathy as she rushed to the bed and began jumping up and down on it. I chuckled softly; she was such as child at times. I placed our bags on the desk without unpacking our few belongings and grabbed my dad's old gun out of the smaller bag. It was one of our hotel rituals to have a weapon nearby always and I kept it going. Then I stripped down to my boxers, pushed Kathy off the bed, and got into the very same bed with a slurred good night.
