I rapped my scarf tightly around my neck as I shuffled further down the very familiar road. My hands rubbed over my arms to stop the coldness of the winter air from taking over my body. The bright pink wellies I'd purchased only a few days prior we're creating shapes in the white snow below me. This has always fascinated me, the way that something so natural and soft can mould so easily into something man created.
I stepped through the front door of my family home and the warmth spread through my body. I slipped my jacket off and made my way through to the kitchen. My mum was stood at the work surface chopping potatoes and boiling carrots. It was something she always did on a Sunday, a proper roast dinner. It's always been that way; one of those great family traditions. It started to become mums obsession when dad walked out on us, me and my twin brother Josh were only 10, We don't remember it well but it still has an effect on us. My older brother, Liam, was 12 when he left; he always seemed more resentful.
Today was a special day for her. Liam had finished his tour about a week ago but he's been staying at his flat in London to tie up everything with his management team. He's coming back home today though, Mum's so excited, she's been planning his day for the past couple of weeks. Nothing's to much for her baby boy. God, that makes me sound so resentful but it's just so frustrating that she fusses over him so much. When Liam was born there was a lot of problems so Mum constantly used to wrap him up in cotton wool. That all changed when the band was formed, she couldn't control him anymore. Don't get me wrong, we all love of Mum, she can just be quite possessive sometimes.
I was really looking forward to seeing Liam, something I hadn't done in four months. The three of us used to be really close but that changed when he left too. It's not his fault, he's living his dream. Obviously he calls all the time, we're pretty much in constant contact, but it's just not the same. Honestly, I want my big brother back.
I waved to Mum and jogged up the stairs, passing Josh's room and heading straight to mine, sitting myself down at the white corner desk. Bringing up my editing software, I began to work on fixing mine and Josh's latest video. Tomorrow was our upload day and I still hadn't started filtering though the footage yet. This is something I had to do regularly, I didn't mind though, if it was left to Josh it would never get done. See, YouTube videos were something we had started around a year ago, posting covers regularly. We have quite a big following but I guess that was down to Liam's influence more than our talents. That's not me being ungrateful at all, I'm extremely thankful for everything Liam has done for us, It's just sometimes i wonder what would have happened if we'd have done it all by ourselves. But, this was our full-time job now, dropping out of college probably isn't seen as the best decision but it was right for us and our family backed us up.
The sound of my name being screamed from downstairs shook me out of my trance as I looked away from my computer screen. I'd been editing for over an hour without even realising. Glancing at the clock I quickly realised I needed to help my mum set the table ready for Liam's arrival, just as I'd promised.
"Tell Josh to get his lazy arse down these stairs too, yeah?" I chuckled as my mum shouted her request from downstairs. She gets so easily frustrated at the fact Josh spends most of his time in his bedroom writing songs, she puts it down to him being too antisocial. He says being away from her noise helps his creative juices flow.
I knocked on the door but didn't wait for an answer before I let myself in. As soon as he saw me he pulled his earphones out and raised an eyebrow. "Can I help you?"
"Mum wants us downstairs, Liam will be here soon." He nods and scoops up his phone before following me out of his room and down the stairs. The knock at the door as we reached the ground level of our house made me reach out and grab the handle before anyone else could.
I pulled the front door open to be greeted by my older brother who instantly walked in and threw his arms around me, picking me up off the ground and kissing my head before putting me back down and moving on to greet Josh and my Mother. He'd grown up so much in the last few months and I suddenly couldn't understand how my big brother was twenty years old.
"Oh my baby!" My Mum cried, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him all over.
