June 6th, 1940
"Let me get back to you on that." I ran to the door before turning to wave at him with a cheeky grin. He shook his head and waved back, turning back the way we came. I bit my lip. I already knew my answer. It would just take me some time to be able to admit it. I opened the door and ran up the stairs as fast as I could. I had to tell Tommy.
I barged into his bedroom door squealing. He quickly turned to look at me, cocking his eyebrow in confusion.
"Rose, what the hell is wrong with you?" He chuckled. "Why are squealing like a little pig?" I just jumped up and down and clapped my hands. I was acting like an idiot.
"Tommy!" That's all I could get out. I was entirely speechless. He was handsome. He was a gentleman. He cared, or at least he seemed to. Was I being too rash? No. I knew this would be a good idea for me.
"Okay, Sara, I get you want to talk to me," he held his hands on my shoulders. "Now, if you could just use words to communicate and not just sounds that would be fantastic."
"I got asked out. By a boy. A cute boy. A REALLY cute boy." I couldn't help but giggle more and clasped my hands together in excitement.
"Who asked you out?" He laughed. "took long enough."
I really hesitated when I went to tell him. How was he going to react to this? I was overthinking it. He'd be fine.
"Um, Harry, actually." Tommy's eyes widened.
"He did what?" He looked slightly angry. "You're going to go out with Harry?"
"Well, he doesn't know that yet. He asked I told him to wait for an answer. I don't know how to tell him I would love to."
"Why don't you try 'Harry, I'd love to'," he rolled his eyes at me and I giggled.
"You really think that's how I should say it?" I bit my lip.
"How about I call him?" He grabbed the phone and smirked.
"How about no, Thomas Andrew Hensley."
"I'm thinking yes Sara Nychole Hensley." He laughed and picked up the phone, asking for Harry's line. We fought for a minute or two, wrestling to take the phone from one another but he won and I punched his arm lightly.
"I hate you. You're an ass." I giggled and walked out of the room. I gave a huge sigh and I headed to the kitchen. I was parched from walking and excitement. I was hungry, too. I found some rice and chicken I could make for now and it would hold everyone over until we went grocery shopping, which needed to be done today as well. I pulled out the pots and began making lunch.
Mom came in wondering what I was doing and I told her I was hungry. All she did was thank me and went to her room.
"Mom, we need to go the market today and pick up stuff for the house." I stirred the rice.
She came back in with dad's wallet. "What all do we need dear?" She found a piece of paper and I rattled off a few things to her as she made a list. She placed the money I might need down and gave me a soft shove so she could finish lunch while I went shopping. I grabbed our own basket and kissed her goodbye and left once again for the day.
