"Coming!" I shouted from the kitchen, still in a daze from my realization.
I sit down next to my Mum and Fraser, opposite Sam and Lilly who both give me a small smile as I take my seat. I feel all of their eyes watching my bandaged hand and the looks of sympathy and pity all pile in. I do an awkward jazz hand with it to show them I'm fine.
I watch as the guests get their food first with both Sam and his wife taking big heaps of the mashed potato and carrots. Fraser doesn't get much food, which Lilly notices and passes a glance to him but he just nods and smiles.
As I get my food, I reach for the serving spoon in the mashed potato. After getting what I want, I sit down again and a hand brushes my thigh. I look over at Fraser who continues to eat as if nothing happened.
I try not to think about it, but after everything that has happened tonight, it just adds to my confusion.
We continue dinner as normal, my parents talking about the trip they are going on. My mum asking nosy questions to Fraser which he politely answers.
I help to clean up the dishes after we are done and Fraser joins me to dry off the washing up.
"How's your hand?" He says, startling me as he spoke from behind me.
"Fine," I reply. My breath catches in my throat as he reaches over me to grab a plate. He gets so close that his shoulder brushes my arm and an unfamiliar feeling of butterflies returns to the pit of my stomach. To avoid any embarrassment, I take the bowl I was drying and put it in the cupboard. All the time I was doing this, I could feel his eyes locked on my body, watching my every move.
I return to the table, leaving him to dry the dishes. Alone.
I feel guilty but I am not having a week of feeling like this so I try to suppress these feelings. Just as I regain my self-control, he returns to his seat next to mine. He shoots me a smile.
God this is going to be a long week.
