The alarm clock blared, letting out a repetitive beep every second or so. Luna, just waking up, reached her hand across the nightstand and turned off the alarm clock. She sat up and sighed, a deep sigh that would only signal the beginning of something. The first day of school. Luna stretched for a minute, contemplating the day ahead. It was the first day back from summer and she would be a senior now. She was grateful she only had one more year left of school, only to go work at a job for most of her life, until she retired and died. Dying just as anyone else, as it doesn't matter who you are or what you accomplished. She thought about that a lot. About how it would just end like that. And nothing would be worthwhile. She supposed religious people thought in a different manner.
She got up and pulled on a long sleeve top with high waisted jeans and some sneakers.
She chuckled to herself and went downstairs to eat breakfast. She got out some cereal and some almond milk, and started to eat, browsing her phone while doing so.
Once she was finished, she slung her backpack over her shoulder and started walking to school, unready for another day there. She saw many people who appeared to also be going to school. Some were wearing t shirts from her high school and some were not. She gazed at her fellow young people and wondered how they felt.
As she approached the school she heard someone calling her name.
"Luna! Hey Luna, wait up! It's Ash your friend since we were two!"
Luna groaned and waited for Ash to get beside her. Ash was indeed her best friend and although neither said it, they both knew it. They were together a lot but over the summer Ash had been too caught up trying to get a boyfriend to hang out with Luna. Luckily they got one.
"You know Ash, you could always not leave your house so late so you can catch up to me. I mean you live two minutes away for fuck's sake."
"Yeah yeah I know," they replied, Ash blushing from Luna teasing them.
They walked in silence for a few minutes each nervous about school.
That's the thing about real friends, Luna thought, you can always stop talking for a while and they'll know if you aren't mad at them and it's not awkward or anything. It's just a break.
They entered the school, each going down their respective hallways to get to their lockers. They hugged goodbye and hoped they had a few periods together.
