AN: Disclaimer! This chapter portrays some people rather negatively. As in, as assholes. I know they're not actually assholes, but, on the part of Ashh especially, who I don't know as well as the Creatures, needed someone to act that way to move the story in the right direction. I'm usually a stickler for correct characterization, but I needed a less than accurate minor character simply because if I was accurate to everyone they'd all be amazingly nice and shit and we can't have that, so.
On the other hand, this is the chapter I've been waiting to write since the birth of this story.
THREE WEEKS LATER
“If you could put your goddamn video games away for ten minutes…”
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s kind of my goddamn job.”
“Yeah, it’s one of my two jobs too, but I still take breaks to spend time with you!”
“What the fuck are you talking about? We had a fucking picnic yesterday. We spent all day together doing stupid romantic shit.”
“What, so spending time together is stupid now? You’re the one who said we’d go get something to eat tonight, not me.”
“Well I didn’t think you’d just show up randomly and try to make me drop everything.”
“It’s nine at night, Seamus! You didn’t even bother to text me and say you couldn’t do anything! You never blow off Sly or James when you’re going out for drinks—“
“—Get out.”
“What?”
Seamus finally spun his chair around to face Ashh, taking a deep breath as he raked his hair with his fingers irritably. She was standing in the middle of the room, arms crossed, a scowl etched deep into her usually pretty features.
Seamus met her accusing gaze wearily.
“I’m tired, and I have to finish this fucking editing, and you being all pissed off at me isn’t helping. Get. Out.”
Ashh stared at him incredulously for a moment, before she turned on her heel and strode out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Seamus felt guilt begin to settle in the pit of his stomach.
Ashh paced back and forth in the hallway outside of the three bedrooms for a few minutes before leaning against the wall opposite the stairs and slowly sliding down, resting her head on her knees.
A voice wafted up the staircase ahead of its owner. “Hey, Ashh.”
She raised her head dejectedly, the awkward conversation she’d had with Sly a few days ago suddenly running through her head. “Hey, Aleks.”
“You okay?” He stopped in front of her, a hand outstretched to help her up. She grabbed it and hoisted herself to her feet, now face to face with the Russian.
Ashh’s eyes slid over his friendly face. Seamus was a dick who cared more about his upload schedule than his girlfriend. Aleks, on the other hand, was here, and he was nice, and interested in her, and damn if she didn’t need the comfort.
So she wrapped her arms around his neck and closed the distance between them.
Ashh could feel his shock on his impassive lips, in the surprised gasp that opened his soft mouth and the hand that instinctively brushed her waist.
She smiled into the kiss as he put his hands on her shoulders, but it fell again as Aleks gently pushed her away, her back thumping against the wall.
“Ashh…” he murmured, eyes downcast. Whatever he was going to say next was cut off as two doors opened at the same time.
“Have you seen—“
“Do you know if Ashh—“
Both James and Seamus stopped dead in their tracks, taking in the scene right outside of their bedrooms—Aleks and Ashh, very nearly pressed together against the, her arms around his neck and his on her shoulders, both of their lips a bit red and wet.
Aleks broke the shocked silence first. “James, I—“
“You fucking—“
“—was going to apologize—“
“—just listen to—“
“—you didn’t want me—“
“—after everything—“
“—ENOUGH!”
Even James stopped shouting and turned to look at the panting blonde. It was a frightening sight, to see Seamus’s normally rather passive blue eyes drowning in fury, locked on Ashh’s face.
“Enough,” he repeated, detached, icily. The command hung in the still air like a cloud, like a fog weighing down on them. His gaze never wavered, boring into Ashh’s defiant eyes. “James and I are going drinking, aren’t we, James?”
James’s irritated, apprehensive expression slowly faded back into anger, and something worse—something like resignation. “Yeah, we are. Let’s go, Seamus.”
Aleks, who had disentangled himself from Ashh during all of the yelling (though he hadn’t been able to escape the initial screech that escaped her), opened his mouth to say something, anything, but quickly shut it with a small click as James shot him a venomous look.
Seamus finally broke his glare to make towards the stairs, James in tow.
He paused, hand on the railing, right at the top of the staircase.
“I guess we’re all done here,” he said, a bit melancholy, loud enough for Ashh and Aleks to hear even though he had his back turned to them, before continuing his descent.
Everyone knew he didn’t just mean the argument.
