Deep End

The others splash in the deep end of the pool,
I stay in the shallow end and try to stay cool.
The others want me to go over and play,
I don't trust the water so I choose to stay.
One by one the others jump in,
Some flop around and some look like a pin.
I hug the edge while waves come near,
I hold my breath and try to steer clear.
One wave catches me and drags me under,
Like a bird that swoops and dives in thunder.
I slowly sink silently close to the bottom,
I am a leaf falling in Autumn.
I push myself up to take a deep breath in,
When I realize I'm in the deep end my head starts to spin.
The others continue their fun,
But in this moment the waves have won.
