The tumble and roll of the heavy seas had calmed with the deepening swell, fading into a soft lull as the waters darkened with the coming night. It was a needed reprieve for the young mer having been thrown about within the roaring storm that tore the sky and pulled the ocean into a violent squall. He'd barely survived the torrent of the waves as they sucked him in, casting him out into the wild unknown.
The little one had lain there upon the barren rocks, battered and bruised, unwilling to move until the stiffness of his muscles gave. Yet he forced himself to move, knowing that something was wrong. The waters hung heavy on his shoulders and nipped at his fins with a frigid bite; the current still with an unearthly quiet. Green eyes squinted through the dark, their glow piercing into the water and scanning over the barren reef for any sign of his kin. There was no sign of any others.
He chirped, hoping that his mother would hear his trill and come find him, but nothing stirred amidst the rocks. He called out again, perking his ears in search of reply, and yet nothing came.
He didn't understand. While he could recall his mother taking him to the edge of the reef, and getting caught in the squall, she'd always come and saved him from being pulled out. Yet she wasn't here... He knew not the true reason behind it. That he'd been thrust into the mercy of the ocean swell in hopes that the storm would end him so that she didn't have to see the dead eyes of her youngest child. All he knew was that he was alone in the cold dark, hungry and scared, and calling out for a mother that would not come....
