Chapter 1 Egos

It was mid afternoon when Doctor Esson looked over his shoulder and grinned as Doctor Bashir entered the lab. He grabbed the file off the desk and stood next to the newly spawned omega awaiting discharge to the dorms. "Doctor, this one is ready for field testing."

Dr. Bashir let out a loud sigh. Releasing them into the world wasn't some sort of training exercise where they'd be monitoring them. "It's not 'field testing'."

Dr. Esson snickered. "But of course it is. We toss them in the wild and see what happens-"

They aren't animals! Bashir's blood roiled in his veins. "You stupid-"

Dr. Watanabe put his arm around Bashir's shoulders and squeezed tightly. He smiled politely at Dr. Esson although his black eyes were quite menacing for someone so docile. "Let's not be unpleasant today, doctors."

Dr. Bashir shoved him to the side and sucked his teeth.

Dr. Esson rubbed his chin. "You're pretty riled up, Bashir. Sure you're not the one in heat?"

"We don't go into heat." Dr. Bashir glared at him. "I'm not some teen alpha. I'm an adult and a doctor with full control. Unlike some alpha-whores I know."

Dr. Esson recoiled. "What? Why you-! "

They grabbed each other by the collars and began pushing each other around. Dr. Jamison and Cash, the lab assistant/doctor-in-training, looked up from their monitors. The new omega grabbed onto Dr. Watanabe's lab coat with trembling hands.

Dr. Watanabe walked over and separated them. "Now now. Not in front of the children." He scowled at them. "You're scary."

Bashir glanced over. Derrick, the last of a batch of newly spawned omegas, was watching them with large brown eyes. He took a deep breath and grabbed a cigarette out of his coat pocket.

"My apologies, young Derrick." The scent of cloves filled the room as he inhaled the lit cigarette. Nicotine rushed through his veins bringing him a sense of calm. He exhaled as he returned to business mode.

Derrick blushed. "No worries, Dr. Bashir."

Bashir picked up a folder off his desk. "Do you have all your necessary information?"

"Yes, sir," he nodded.

Bashir handed him a thick manila envelope and walked him toward the door. "Good. You'll stay in the dorms and come and go as you like. You can work or go to school. Make sure you let Tandy know so she can help you get the paperwork done. You know you should be on your guard during the full and new moons. Alphas and Omegas are most potent at these times."

"Yes, Doctor." Derrick turned from the door to take a final look at the lab and the doctors that had been his trainers the last three months. They were standing beside one another smiling with pride like a parent sending their child off to college. His eyes misted over.

Bashir cleared his throat. "Anything else?"

Derrick looked at their smiling faces. "No, Doctor. Thank you all for everything."
