Chapter 18 The Alpha and the Beta

Kevin adjusted his tie and slowly walked up to the apartment building. He shivered as a cool breeze whipped through nipping his exposed flesh. Fall already. I'm so nervous. He didn't come back to the lab today. He got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.  What if this is over and he never wants to see me again?

A couple walked by with their dog. They were huddled close together and giggling. He felt a sharp pain in his chest and clenched his fist. Bashir and Kira are right. He's always been the dominant one. Coming to my rescue, wining and dining me, taking the lead in the bedroom. It's my turn to spoil and comfort him.

He sniffed the bouquet of red roses he bought and marched into the building. The staff greeted him and several of the tenants complimented his new edgy haircut . His heart pounded in his chest as he rode the elevator to their floor. He stepped off the elevator and felt his stomach tighten. Is it too late to run?

He passed by his reflection in the large golden mirror in the hallway. Kira dragged me and Cash to the hairdresser after work. He touched the bangs covering part of his forehead. I look like a different person.

"Being bold is harder than I thought." He said to himself.  He took a deep breath and forced his cement feet down the hall. Is this how alphas feel all the time? Under all that brazen cockiness is a person scared shit-less of rejection? Hiding their fear and rejection under a false confidence? I have a new found respect for them, I think. His heart was thundering in his ears. As a beta trying to be the one to take initiative, this is nerve-wracking.

He finally reached the end of the hall where their apartment was located. He reached into his pocket and paused. Should I use the key? No. I want this to be a surprise.

A shaky finger reached out and pressed the bell. He should be home. Maybe he went out, though. Shit. I shoulda made sure first.

He began to panic when the locked turned and the door swung open. A nervous smile spread across his face. Remember what you practiced with Kira.

Peter stood in the doorway, dripping from head to toe, wrapped in a towel around his waist. He raised an eyebrow at the well dressed Asian man standing in front of him holding a bouquet of flowers.

Heat rushed into Kevin's cheeks. We didn't practice what to do when a half naked man with a hot body answered the door. He tried to steady his voice. "Hello, Peter."

"Kevin."

"C-Can I come in?"

Peter shrugged and walked inside. "You still live here."

Give him the flowers, stupid!  Kevin rushed in behind him and reached out to grab his wrist. He missed and snatched the towel off instead.

Peter looked down then turned and frowned at him. "Kev?"

Heat rushed into Kevin's face as he held the towel and bouquet out to Peter with his head down. "I-I'm so sorry! I-I was tr-trying to grab your arm!"

Un-phased, Peter put his hands on his hips. He actually found Kevin's antics kind of cute.  "Why are you embarrassed? We live together. You've seen me naked before."

"I-I don't know."

Peter rubbed his chin. "Those flowers for me?"

"Y-yes." Kevin lifted his head and smiled. "I wanted to apologize for not being more encouraging during all that."
