(( Avery's POV ))
I felt a small kick in my belly and I smiled. My baby was getting more and more active every day. I was about 5 months along and it was starting to get noticeable.
Daryl was outside with Carl, teaching him how to shoot his crossbow. He kept his promise, which made my heart swell. Keeping promises was hard these days.
I heard footsteps behind me and turned to Merle. I scoffed and turned back around.
"Aye, sunshine don't be so rude," Merle chuckled, sitting down beside me.
I rolled my eyes, "Hello, Merle Dixon." I said sarcastically. Merle let out another chuckle and shifted his weight.
"Ya sure are a sassy one ain't ya?" he said. "My baby brother would beat the shit out of sassy people back in the day."
I said nothing, just shuffled my feet on the dirt ground.
"My brother was always the soft one," Merle went on. "If ya want real protection, I suggest ya be with me, sunshine."
I scoffed and stood up, shooting Merle a glare before stalking over to Daryl.
"Hey sunshine, it was just a suggestion!" Merle said, throwing his hands up and walking after me.
"What was a suggestion?" Daryl asked, patting Carl on the back. "Take a few practice shots."
"Nothin', little brother," Merle chuckled, stopping beside me. Daryl rolled his eyes and looked at me expectantly.
"Your jackass brother suggested that I should be with him if I wanted real 'protection'," I muttered, looking at the ground. I glanced at Daryl to see his blue eyes blazing.
He stalked up to his brother and grabbed him by his shoulders. "Listen 'ere bro, 'cause this is the last time I'm telling ya: ya lay off 'er or I'll beat yer sorry ass in." He growled, shaking Merle back and forth. Merle chuckled and rolled his eyes, "Ya couldn't. You're too weak."
"She ain't yer property to satisfy your lust! It ain't yer baby she's carryin'!" Daryl yelled. He trailed off and stared at his brother, regretting what he said.
My heart dropped and I swallowed nervously. I didn't want Merle Dixon to know I was pregnant, and neither did Daryl.
"Ho-holy shit! Ma baby brother's gonna be a father?" Merle exclaimed, his eyes widening. "Well, ain't that a surprise! I didn't know you were into them type of things."
I heard the twang of an arrow being launched and turned to see Carl shooting the crossbow. His blue eyes were shining as he hit a tree.
"Yeah, well ya don't know me at all." Daryl spat, glaring daggers at his brother.
"You've changed, baby brother. You became soft," Merle murmured, sounding disappointed.
"I thought ya said I was soft before," Daryl retorted. Shooting one last glare at Merle, he pushed past him and stalked into the department store.
I sighed and glanced at Merle, my eyes full of sympathy for him. He couldn't help the way he was, and I knew what it was like to be rejected by a sibling.
I decided Daryl needed some space, so I decided to head over to Carl. The young boy was gathering the arrows out of the tree.
"You're a good shot. Daryl would be surprised," I commented, leaning against a light pole. Carl laughed slightly.
"Where is Daryl?" he questioned.
"Him and Merle had a little cat fight. He needs some time to cool down," I told him. "Can I watch?"
