(( Avery's POV ))
I woke up to the sound of a car door slamming shut. I sat up to see the truck was stopped and Daryl wasn't in the driver's seat. Carl was sitting up next to me, looking around with terrified eyes.
"Carl, what's going on?" I asked softly, placing my hand on the boys shoulder. Carl point a shaky finger out the window. I followed his finger to see hundreds of walkers surrounding the caravan. Rick, Daryl, Glenn, Maggie, Carol, Axel, Michonne, Sam, James, and Brandon held this guns up and were shooting walkers. I began to unbuckle my seatbelt to go and help them, but Carl stopped me.
"Daryl told me to not let you go out there," He said cautiously.
"Why? They need help!" I exclaimed, shaking him off of me.
"You can't risk the baby's life like this!"
I froze with my hand on the door handle. Carl knew. But how?
"You- you know?" I stammered. Carl nodded, "How?"
"I haven't known long. Daryl just told me," Carl explained. "I don't wanna loose you like I lost my mom..."
I sighed and sat back in my seat and grabbed Carl's hand, "You wont." I promised.
"It's hard to keep promises these days," Carl pointed out.
"Yeah, you should tell that to Daryl," I retorted. Carl sighed and looked out the window. There was a big bang, and I turned to see a walker pressing itself again the car window. It snapped its teeth against the glass, staining it was blood. It scratched at the window, it's dark, lifeless eyes gleaming with hunger.
I scoffed and grabbed my machete out of its sheath. I rolled down the window just enough for the walker to stick its head through. I quickly stabbed it in the head, making it fall to the ground. Another walker took its place, and I did the same.
I heard the driver's door open and I whipped around to see Daryl frantically climbing in.
"We gotta get out of 'ere. Drive back the way we came," He muttered as he started the engine. Walkers piled against the truck, snapping their teeth and banging on the windows. Rick began to push through the herd in Carol's Cherokee, leading the caravan. Daryl slammed on the gas and pushed through the walkers, squashing some of their heads in the process. I sighed in relief and laid my head again the window; we were safe, for now.
After hours of driving, the sun began to rise, turning the sky orange. I didn't go back to sleep; I was still shaken up by the herd. I've never seen so many walkers at once...
Carl slept on my shoulder, but not good. He'd keep on waking up, shaking for nightmares. The poor kid didn't get enough sleep those days.
"You told Carl," I said to Daryl, breaking the silence.
Daryl grunted, his eyes fixed on the road.
"I understand that it was kinda an emergency, but I didn't really want anyone else knowing yet..." I told him awkwardly.
"Well, people are beginnin' to suspect somethin' anyway," Daryl retorted, glancing at my belly. "They either think yer gettin' fat- which isn't really possible nowadays- or yer pregnant."
I glanced down at my growing stomach and realized he was right. I was about 4 months along by now, and I was beginning to get a belly; one that didn't look like I was just gaining weight.
i felt a strong hand on my thigh, "It's better to tell people. If Rick knows, he'll be more motivated to try an' find a good home for ya," He said quietly.
I nodded in agreement and looked out the window, examining the landscape. Occasionally, we'd pass a few walkers roaming around. When they noticed us, they'd shuffled after the caravan, but soon gave up as we drove past them.
