The buzzing of my cellphone awakens me from my slumber as I move to shield my eyes from the harsh morning light. 'Why don't I ever shut the blinds?' I am barely hanging onto the side of the bed as a warm weight is pressed into my back. I sit up and look down at the tuft of curly brown hair sticking out of the bed covers. 'I thought Hiro went back to his room last night. I guess he crawled in after I fell asleep.' I pry the hands of my sleeping little brother off my waist as I drape my legs over the side of the bed and stand up to walk to the bathroom. My whole body aches and as I stare into my reflection in the mirror I see that my eyes are red and puffy at the rims from crying. I quickly wash my face and brush my teeth before hurrying back to my room to check my cellphone. I have a text from Max asking if I'm okay. He really is worried about me. I send him a quick response saying that Im fine before turning to rouse Hiro.
"Don't wanna." Hiro mutters into the covers as I try to pull them off him. He keeps a tight grip on the down comforter as he holds it in place over his head.
"Hiro you gotta get up. I can't change with you in here." I tell him.
"Don't mind me. I promise I won't peak."
I groan before releasing the covers and heading down the hall to Tomo's room. The door immediately flys open on the first knock revealing a slightly disheveled Tomo wearing a ragged t-shirt and boxer shorts.
"Can you help get Hiro out of my room?" I ask nicely to which he nods and steps past me as he walks into my room. Seconds later I hear high pitched screeching as Tomo emerges with a struggling Hiro draped over his shoulder.
"PUT ME DOWN THIS INSTANT TOMO!" Hiro screams as he bangs his fists on Tomo's back. Tomo steps into Hiro's room and throws the small boy onto his bed. I can hear Hiro's screams of protest as I swiftly walk to my room and lock the door behind me. I dress quickly in casual attire and grab my school bag and phone. I am not looking forward to going to school but I know that if I skip I will just end up lazing around here all day thinking about Abby. School was a good distraction.
My brothers are quick to get ready and within ten minutes we are all in the car driving to school. We drop off Hiro first but before going to my high school Tomo suggests we stop and get coffee. I welcome the idea as he changes course and starts driving into town. Meanwhile I am texting Max on my phone. He is really worried about me and is trying to make plans for us to meet up, the only problem is that I'm not sure I really want to see him. I like Max but as for right now I kind of just want to be left alone. I don't want his pity. As I am responding to his text Tomo runs over a pothole and I drop my phone under the seat. I reach my hand under to grab it and pull it back up but the phone I pull out isn't mine. Its a newer phone in a bright pink case with little stickers on the back. It looks somewhat familiar. I press the on button but the screen stays black as the battery is probably dead.
"Whose is this?" I ask Tomo as I show him the pink phone. He parks the car in the cafe parking lot and turns to look at the phone confused. He stares at it for a few seconds before a glimmer of recognizition crosses his face before his eyes turn dark.
"This belongs to a friend." He said swiftly as he snatches the phone from me.
"What's it doing here?"
"They probably left it in my car one night after a party or something." He mumbled. 'Wouldn't someone notice if they lost their cellphone?' I thought. Tomo quickly shoved the phone into his bag as the two of us got out of the car to go get coffee.
Time Skip:
After school, Tomo drove us home but he wasn't in the house for more than ten minutes before he turned around, declared he forgot something at work, and left. Hiro went up to his room to do homework while I was downstairs watching TV. After about an hour I turned off the Tv and got up to go upstairs. As I walked to the stairs I noticed Tomo's bag leaning against the banister. I pick it up along with my own bag and carry it upstairs to put in Tomo's room. As I reach the top of the stairs I trip slightly and something falls out of Tomo's bag. I look down and see it is the pink cellphone from earlier. I guess he hasn't given it back yet. I pick up the phone and bring it to my room where I connect it to my charger. I can only assume that when he does give it back they will be more happy if it was charged. While the phone is charging I put my stuff away and start working on my homework. I hear the startup tone of the cellphone as it powers up but pay no mind to it. Seconds later the phone goes nuts as it receives about a million texts and notifications at once. I hold my ears to muffle the constant beeping as I reach for the phone to mute it. As I do so I can not help but see a few of the texts passing by on the screen.
Abby, where are you?
Everyone is worried. please answer!
You've been gone for hours!
We've called the police!
Please pick up the phone!
This isn't funny Abby!
Please answer!
Where the hell are you?!
The messages flied by so fast that it was hard to read but they were all pretty similar in nature. I felt the air around me grow cold as the hands holding the cellphone became numb. No wonder I thought the phone looked familiar. This is Abbys phone. Why was it in Tomo's car? Why did he have it? DID HE KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT ABBY'S DEATH? I quickly turned off the phone to stop the beeping and hid it under my bed. As if not being able to see it would somehow make its existence go away. I was so caught up in my own little panic session that I didn't even notice someone enter the room.
"What are you doing?"
