The sound of an organ carried its way through the Palais Garnier, more commonly known as the Paris Opera House. The music ranged from old Operas from the last few centuries to arias of the current nineteenth century. The actors did not even blink at this sound, for they believed it to be the Opera ghost, who played the organ regularly. They claimed that it had a death's head and was dress clothes. Though many claimed to have met this ghost, there were few who actually had. A lot of people who met the ghost were very unfortunate. One of these people was the chief stage shifter, Joseph Buquet, now deceased. Although these people assumed that they had met the ghost, they were wrong--more often than not. There was someone else more violent but completely identical to the man that was called the Phantom of the Opera. If they knew, some might go as far as to call this violent man the true Opera ghost, and for name's sake, we will call him as such.
People might have a harder time than they anticipated trying to guess which one was the Opera ghost and which was the Phantom, for they truly were identical except for the masks and some other minor details. The Phantom of the Opera wore a black mask, but the Opera ghost, on the other hand, wore a mask the colour of dried blood.
Almost nobody knew who the Opera ghost really was, as he almost never shared his past, and although he was curious, the Phantom didn't pry, as he knew how crucial secrets were to a person's life.

It wasn't long before the Opera ghost finished playing his medley and started a classic evil laugh, which echoed throughout the very cellars he had been playing in. The Phantom sighed, shaking his head as his masked companion laughed maniacally. He stood up from the edge of the organ bench where he had been perched, listening to the Opera ghost play. Then as he headed towards the lake, the Opera ghost yelled jokingly, "Is my playing really that bad, Erik?" The Phantom ignored the use of his given name and headed to the lake, hoping to block out the sound of his companion playing with the sounds of the actors.
----------------------
As he made his way to Box 5, Erik's mind was full of thoughts of the masked man, who he knew was still playing the organ. Usually Erik's companion was known by his self-given nickname of "Red Death".
The sound of Christine's singing carried easily from Box 5. Erik faintly recognized the tune of the aria from Faust. He hummed along to the tune for a moment, then Christine faltered before stopping her voice completely. It took Erik only a moment to know it was because his voice had carried to her. He didn't call out to her, like he truly wanted to, instead he only sighed and walked away.
