1- eye contact

I walked into the auditorium after school.
Today was the day.

Callbacks for this years musical.

I had made it through the first stage, now I just needed to do well for this.

There were familiar faces sitting in the seats, but I just sat in the front row with room beside me for Alexa.

As my best friend it was only customary that she sat with me for this.

This years musical title was "Do You Wanna Dance", also known as a spin-off of footloose. One main girl and guy character, a subplot for another girl and guy, as well as the main girls parents.

My goal was obviously the main girl, named Delaney Duzwell.

I looked around a bit, letting the chatter of everyone else fill my ears. The actor fanatic, Andrew, was most likely getting the main guy part.

You could call him .. unliked. The story had recently reached me that he had been caught watching porn on the school computers.

Not a very good first impression.

I saw an old friend, Alayna, looking happy and gorgeous like always. She was my main competition, having an amazing voice like mine and always full of energy.

I felt my leg bounce as the anxiety sunk in.

My eyes darted everywhere, noticing mostly upper class men filling the room.

I was only a sophomore, and most, if not all, of my friends were at least juniors.

I saw Savannah, which was odd to me. She could kind of sing, and had never done drama before. I was surprised she had gotten a call back.

The boy next to her is what really made me do a double take.

Next to her was quite possibly the most popular boy in school. His hair puffed up perfectly, smooth skin and bright eyes. I let my eyes linger on him, taking him in.

Calum Hood sat, legs sprawled out, and hand on Savannah's thigh. He smiled at something she said, and I had to pull my eyes away.

I kinda felt like a creep.

I turned to Alexa.

"Calum Hood got called back? That's surprising."

She looked over to him.

"Huh." She shrugged. "Well, I wouldn't mind dancing with him." She whispered to me, making me laugh.

The drama director, Mrs.White, walked into the stage. She was a tiny woman, hardly reaching my shoulders.

Then again, I was standing a whole five feet eight inches off the ground.

Nonetheless, this tiny woman had a massive voice on her. Some thought she was terrifying, really.

"Ok guys, we're going to start with the boys songs, then do the girls, and have a cold read. Just relax, be respectful of the people auditioning, and of course have fun. You guys were called back for a reason." She smiled.

I took a deep breath.

"Here goes nothing .."

Callbacks went smoothly. I was confident the entire time, my voice cooperated with me, and nothing surprised me.

I also got to look at Calum for extended periods of time, so who was complaining.

I was about to walk to with Alexa, gathering my  things. She had a car so she was taking me home.

As we walked out the back exits, there was a group standing in a circle. They were talking about callbacks, so naturally me and Lex joined in.

"I think I did decent, nothing went horribly wrong for me."  Joanna said sweetly. She was a senior and one of my closer friends.

"Yeah me too! I just wish I would have acted a bit more with my solo song." Logan shrugged, looking around the group.

"I'm just glad I got called back." Calum said, "I've only done musical once three years ago, so I'm glad to know I still matter!" He laughed, letting a chuckle ripple through the group.

"White must have been on drugs when she wrote the list then, you totally shouldn't have made it." Savannah said, laughing and hitting his arm.

They were the power couple of the school, and everyone was jealous of both of them.

Calum chimed in through the laughter, "Well I mean, if she has any spare I'm sure she'd let me know.." the laughter continued, and I worked up an ounce of courage to reply.

"Yeah .. She seems like the type to deal. I've heard rumors." He made eye contact with me and laughed.

"Oh yeah ? Me and you should ask her about it some time." The laughter slowly died down and I felt my face heat up.

It was such a small interaction, why did my brain have to make it such a big deal.

I felt my stomach drop as my anxiety pounded my insides. I just smiled and said "Yeah, for sure."

Someone else chimed in and added a comment about auditioning again, and I nudged Alexa. She looked at me with a smile, and nodded her head.

"Well, see ya guys later. Good luck!" She said, turning and waving to everyone. I just turned and walked, willing my anxiety to calm down.

We made small talk as we headed to her car, glad it was a Friday. We talked about how well the auditions went, and the hopes of who got which parts.

"I wouldn't complain if Calum got the lead guy." Lex said as we both got into her car. I shrugged.

"Only if I get the lead girl." We both laughed, mainly because we had both talked in the past about how much of an attractive human Calum really was.

What a beautiful man.

"I'm just surprised he actually made an effort to include me into the conversation in that group. He's actually nice apparently." I said, getting a small chuckle from Lex.

"Savannah really got herself a dime, huh." She said.

"Seriously" I laughed again

"I've heard that they fuck like, every day though or something. Like actual sex machines." She said, starting the car.

"I believe it. They're both hot as hell so, I suppose it's expected."

She pulled out of her spot, heading to my house. "I just can't wait to see what parts everyone got" Lex said, bouncing in her seat.

"I mean of course I hope I get the lead, but anything is totally ok with me." I said. We found out parts on Monday, and just thinking about it made my stomach flip.

"I wonder what Calum will get." She said, winking and nudging me with her elbow.

"You're such a freak" I laughed. "He has a girlfriend anyways."

"Well. A girl can dream." She said.

"Yup. A girl can dream." I said back. Thinking of the moment he looked in my eyes.
