Lyra pressed the glowing PLAY button, chewing her lip. What would happen this time? What monsters would assault her as a test?
Could it be the tests were finally over?
The screen began to glow. Lyra's fingers prickled, and she looked down to see what was wrong.
They were gone! A muffled cry escaped Lyra's bitten lips. Her mouth dropped open. The nothingness crept up her arm. Lyra's feet began prickling, too. Looking down, Lyra observed that they were almost all gone. The invisibility crept up Lyra's arms and legs and torso, and she began to scream. By the time Lyra's mother had made it down to her basement abode, no one was there.
