Chapter Three – Mr. Carroll
The newspaper is dreadfully boring today. The sky is gloomy, and the weather too humid. I go back to my newspaper when I spot a little black bow bouncing above my newspaper. I look above it a bit to see a girl, maybe a young teen in age, and she looks dishearteningly happy. She kneels down on the sidewalk, sure not to get the hems of her bouncy light blue dress caught beneath her knees, and picks a few red flowers, smiling all the while. My paper crinkles as I move and she looks up, startled, the smile on her face seconds ago no where to be found.
"Hello Sir!" She says, smiling again and I give a sigh.
"Hello child. What are you doing?" I ask her and she smiles brightly, the silhouette of an old church behind her.
"Picking flowers for my mother because she's ill." She comments, her smile dampening for a moment but when she looks back at her flowers it repairs itself.
"Ill with what child?" I ask her and she laughs, airy.
"My name is Marianna, Sir. And she has lost her newborn son... My little brother." The girl, Marianne says and her smile dissolves.
"Nice to meet you Marianne. And I hope your mother is well soon." I say, as if quoting a book but she still smiles.
"Good to meet you too Sir!" She says and I sigh.
"You may call me Mr. Carroll." I mutter and she smiles wider.
"Well it's been a pleasure Mr. Carroll! But I have to bring these flowers back to my mother. Good bye Sir!" She says beaming, and she leaves, not looking back, her dozen red flowers in hand... Interesting child.
