Chapter Seven – Mr. Carroll
I'm walking down an ally to my apartment when a child falls before me. Infuriating brat. I look down at them and my mood changes suddenly. It's Marianne. She gasps when she sees me.
"I'm sorry Mr. Carroll! I'm searching for—I have to go!" She exclaims before running away; the dress she takes such care to keep clean, looking filthy.
"Wait- Marianne!" I shout as I chase after her and suddenly she begins kneeling by garbage cans.
"Here~... Come here~." She purrs to the garbages... Does the child suffer from delusions?
"Marianne-" I begin but she shushes me.
"Shh Mr. Carroll." She sighs and then I see her interest. A pure black kitten. I reach around and pick it up in my hands.
"Here Marianne." I say and something about this chold softens my heart... What's wrong with me? There's something just so undesirably cheery about this blasted child!
"Awe she's so beautiful Mr. Carroll!" She says hugging the furry creature to her chest.
"Keep her." I say, surprising her and myself. She gives me a small sad smile.
"I can't Sir... My mother is allergic." She whispers sadly and I wonder....
"Why isn't your mother watching you?" I ask.
"She's ill; she lost the baby who was going to be my baby brother Sir." She says and I see pure pain ebb over her features. The cat meows and Marianna replaces all of her sadness with joy and affection and looks down at the little kitten.
"Marianne... I'll keep the kitten and you can come visit it as often as you like." I say... What is happening to me?
"Oh really Mr. Carroll?" She asks, her smile radiant... And I smile back.. I could get used to this child.
"Yes... Now pick a name for the kitten." I say and she looks down at it and hums.
"Hm... I think I'll call you... Dinah. My beautiful kitten." She says and I nod. I pull a cigarette out from my pocket and hold it to my lips.
"Dinah it is."
