Candy Hearts

I opened the box and pull out the candies. Three little hearts fall out, each with a short saying.

You're beautiful.

xox

I love you

So short but filled with meaning. I pop them into my mouth one at a time and feel them dissolve into a sweet syrup in my mouth. Once they're gone I go to my box of hearts and pull out three more that will perfectly describe my love.

Kisses

I'm yours

Love you

I place them in the box that by now had the inside coated in sugar from all the hearts. The hearts drop to the bottom of the box and the sugar sticks to my fingers. I close the box and head to the door and grab my coat. I shove my arms into the sleeves as I clutch the box and run down the street to the neighborhood park. I slow down as I near the beaten and worn wooden picnic bench.

I bend to reach under the table and try to balance the box in the crevice of the metal pole supporting the table. It was the only spot under the table now that wasn't covered in spiderwebs with leaves stuck in them. Cleared by all the time the box had been slipped in and out of the hiding space.

Once it's in I turn away and begin to walk back home. As I walk I think of all the letters I've been sent and all the hearts that came with them. How sweet my lover is and how sweet our love is. How we'll tell each other about our day and how we know almost everything about each other. As I walk into my home I hope one day we will get to meet.
