i – how it all started
I’m sure you’ve all experienced this before; you’re sleeping and all of a sudden you’re jolted awake by, and not your goddamn alarm clock I mean seriously who needs one of those, no, by your mother.
She’s screaming and cursing telling you its one o’clock and you shouldn’t be sleeping your life away. She’s stripping off your covers and opening your blinds and basically making you want to jump off a cliff. It’s all around horrible and it happens entirely too often, especially during the summer.
Well you see I never had that experience. My mother didn’t yell or scream, she wasn’t that type of person. However, she always noticed things and that’s how this all started.

It was nearing the end of July and I had been lying in bed, my laptop propped on my lap, scrolling through the endless pages of tumblr and blasting some Neon Trees song. I could hear my father yelling at the TV downstairs no doubt watching a soccer match and my mother’s footsteps creeping up the stairs.
My eyes lifted from the computer screen to see a sickly smile on my mother’s face. Her bright eyes had seemed to be glowing like some sickly cat. She walked towards me cautiously and incredibly slow. The whole scene was quite ridiculous and looking back on it now absolutely unnecessary.
But here you go. The scene is set.
My mother is at the end of the hallway walking slowly towards me with a tray in her hands, her smile as bright as the sun and as fake as the flowers in my neighbor’s front yard. I eye her up suspiciously and shove my laptop to the side, cocking my head and giving her a look of confusion.
“Oh sweetie…we talked to your Aunt Cathy…” She had said, her voice still dripping in that sugary coat.
“And?” I had answered, unsure of what that had anything to do with her stalking towards me like a rabid animal with a tray with what appeared to be a bagel and pill bottle. Her smile softened a bit as she finally made my way to the side of my bed.
“We told her all about you…told her our concerns. She knew right away what was wrong and she promised this would help you. So, for us, I need you to take this.” And she reached for the small white pill container and poured two tiny pills onto her hand. I was bewildered, I knew Aunt Cathy was a little whack, but prescribing me pills without my doctors consent or a proper check-up was a little unnecessary, especially when I had no need for any pills in the first place.
“Mom, what are these for?” I eyes up the green white pills cautiously and then returned my eyes back up to my mother.
“That’s not important right now baby, I just need you to take it. Please?” On a normal day I would’ve argued this, pushed her to her limit and made her tell me what they were and why she was practically shoving them down my throat. But today, I wasn’t up for fighting and that’s why I took the pills.
My mother beamed as she watched me swallow the two pills whole.
“Thank you baby, thank you. Now eat up, don’t get too skinny on me.” She threw me a huge smile and stalked out of the room leaving me alone with my laptop, bagel, and this pill bottle.
I rolled cautiously over and grabbed the pill bottle turning it so I could see the cover clearly.
